    • “Division and Connection”
    • “Sustainability”

  • This is a future-oriented Honors Study Topic!
    • Really think about “what’s next” building on current

trends, your investigation, and your imagination.

HIA’s Three Phases

    • Review the Honors Program Guide to set research objectives.
    • Develop a research question.
    • Investigate credible sources with varied viewpoints.
    • Reflect on and analyze your research to develop conclusions.

Investigate and Analyze

    • Consider how your research findings manifest locally
    • Identify a real-world problem that requires action
    • Develop action and collaboration objectives
    • Execute your plan of action and communication plans

Act and Collaborate

    • Reflect on and evaluate your research, action, and collaboration
    • Assess whether your team met its objectives
    • Assess teamwork and growth as scholars and leaders
    • Write and submit your Hallmark Award entry

Prompt 1: Exploration and Theme Selection

Prompt 2: Investigate Selected Theme

Prompt 3: Develop Your Research Question

Prompt 4: Research Objectives

Prompt 5: Investigate Credible Sources

Prompt 6: Research Conclusions

12 of 41

Phase 1: Investigate and Analyze

Prompt 1: Exploration and Theme Selection

    • Convergent or Divergent Approach?

    • Review Themes

      • Convergent: Brainstorm first, then pick theme.
      • Divergent: Pick Theme first, then brainstorm.

13 of 41

Phase 1: Investigate and Analyze

Prompt 2: Investigate Selected Theme

    • Intentionally read the theme’s overarching question.
      • Analyze question components
      • Identify keywords to guide further reading
      • Reflect on relevant contexts or issues

    • Read the theme’s introductory essay three times:
      • Scope
      • Context
      • Action

14 of 41

Phase 1: Investigate and Analyze

Prompt 3: Develop Your Research Question

    • A strong HIA research question is specific (focuses on a single issue), answerable (requires evidence to draw conclusions), and purposeful (leads to specific action).

Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN?

1. Is immigration good or bad? OR

2. How does access to culturally specific resources (e.g. language

support, community centers, legal aid) affect the long-term social

integration of recently arrived immigrants in mid-sized US cities?

15 of 41

Phase 1: Investigate and Analyze

Prompt 4: Research Objectives

    • Research objectives are measurable outcomes you hope to achieve.
    • What do you want to learn and how do you want to learn it?

    • Examples include:
      • The number of people to serve on your team.
      • Developing a timeline for your research plan.
      • Summary of multiple perspectives.

16 of 41

Phase 1: Investigate and Analyze

Prompt 5: Investigate Credible Sources

    • Begin gathering initial resources with varied viewpoints about your selected theme and research question. Consider:
      • What is the purpose of the source?
      • Is the source current, or is it a classic?
      • Is there detectable bias?
      • Are the conclusions well evidenced?
    • Explain what you learned from each source as it relates to your research question.

17 of 41

Phase 1: Investigate and Analyze

Prompt 6: Research Conclusions

    • Reflect on and analyze what you learned from your research summaries. Consider:
      • What themes emerged from your research?
      • How did your investigation help answer your research question?
      • What were the main points your sources made?
      • What new ideas about the Honors Study Topic and your selected theme did you build from the investigation?
    • Draw two to three conclusions drawn from your sources.

Phase 2: Act and Collaborate

Prompt 7: Connecting Research to Action

    • Revisit what you learned and your research conclusions and consider:
      • How does the issue you researched appear on your campus or community?
      • What real-world problem related to your research requires action?

    • Brainstorm ideas on ways you can use what you learned to positively impact your campus or community.

21 of 41

Phase 2: Act and Collaborate

Prompt 8: Action and Collaboration Objectives

    • Develop clear action and collaboration objectives to address the problem. Consider:

ACTION Objectives

COLLABORATION Objectives

How many people will the team

recruit for the HIA project?

How often will the team meet?

How will the team document

decisions and action items?

How many collaborators will the team invite?

What audience(s) does the

team plan to reach?

Who will delegate responsibilities?

22 of 41

Phase 2: Act and Collaborate

Prompt 9: Identifying Collaborators

    • Identify collaborators on campus and in the community who can help complete your HIA project.

    • Consider:
      • Who can best enhance your project?
      • Who may bring diverse perspectives to the project?
      • How will you gather feedback about your project?

23 of 41

Phase 2: Act and Collaborate

Prompt 10: Action Phase Planning

    • Develop a planning process with clear timelines, delegation, and opportunities to review. Consider:
      • What resources do you have (or will you need)?
      • With whom will you collaborate?
      • How will you communicate progress?
      • How will you identify required skills and learn what you need to learn?
      • What conflicts might arise and how will you address them?

    • Consider using a planning document and collaboration tools (e.g. an “HIA Journal”) to keep the team making relevant progress!

24 of 41

Phase 2: Act and Collaborate

Prompt 11: Executing Your Plan

    • Keep track of your plans! Document key activities, milestones, and observations as you implement your project.

Record:

      • Key activities and dates (work backward from completion date)
      • Challenges encountered and solutions implemented
      • Collaborator feedback

    • Again, make use of your planning document(s) and collaboration tools so everyone can contribute.

The HIA Process

AI as a Tool For Deeper Engagement

Beyond “Googling”

Collaborating with AI early frees you up to:

  • Explore ideas more deeply.

  • Build more authentic connections to content.

  • Produce higher quality work!

How?

AI is great at producing “C-Level” work quickly, so adding your effort on top of that should get you to “A-Level” work (Bowen & Watson, 2024).

33 of 41

  • Use AI to assist in developing options for a research question.
  • Use AI to identify themes from summaries of your credible sources.
  • Use AI to review and improve your Hallmark submissions.
  • Think About:
    • What are some other ways you could use AI to support HIA?
    • Review PTK’s AI Policy

Using AI as an HIA Collaborator…

34 of 41

Ethical Use of AI

PTK’s AI Statement

  • Generative AI apps are valuable tools to help students organize, explore, and refine their work.

  • AI should NOT be the author of submissions for PTK Competitions including Scholarships, Hallmark Awards, Nota Bene, Founders Medal Award, and the Honors Case Study Challenge.

  • We consider copy-paste of AI-produced work plagiarism. When plagiarism is discovered, the entry may be disqualified.

  • Outstanding entries are those that authentically share students' personal experiences in their own words.

35 of 41

  • Prompts are a step-by-step guide through the complete HIA process.

  • Use as part of your HIA Hallmark Awards entry.

Use the Workbook!
