What is Work-Based Learning?

Work-based learning is sustained interactions with industry or community professionals in a real worksite environment. Per the WIOA, Work-Based Learning (WBL) is defined as a structured learning experience at the worksite for a specific timeframe that leads to a career path. WBL is a school-coordinated, sponsored, coherent sequence of workplace experiences that are related to each students’ career goals and interests, while based on instructional preparation, and are performed in partnership with local businesses, industries, or other organizations in the community. WBL enables students to apply classroom instruction in a real-world business or service-oriented work environment.

School-Based Enterprise vs. Internship

School-Based Enterprise

  • Simulated, actual business on school site
  • Teacher/Instructor is the supervisor
  • Students operate business- top to bottom

Examples: business plan, roles, product bidding, vendor research, buying power, shipping, stocking, receiving, marketing, etc.

  • Students create product or produce service to be sold to generate revenue
  • Students “own” the business

Examples: coffee shops, catering for events, etc.

  • NOT a career ready qualifier

Internship

  • School sponsored placement in a real work environment setting
  • Work site employee is the supervisor
  • Student observes business functions and/or actively engages with job role as outlined in training agreement/evaluation plan
  • Student has competencies and skills to be mastered set by the worksite supervisor
  • Placement is aligned to student’s career goals and pathway
  • Possible career ready qualifier if all indicators are met (training agreement & Employability Education Course)
