TEAM BUILDING AND MANAGEMENT
What is Team Building ?
Team building refers to the various activities undertaken to motivate the team members and increase the overall performance of the team. You just can’t expect your team to perform on their own. A motivating factor is a must. Team Building activities consist of various tasks undertaken to groom a team member, motivate him and make him perform his best.
We all are human beings and love appreciation. Any individual performing exceptionally well must be appreciated well in public. He feels happy and motivated to perform even better the next time. If any team member has come out with a unique idea; treat him with any thing that makes him happy. Never criticize any team member or demotivate him if he has failed to perform. Ask him to “Buck up”.
When individuals with similar interest, attitude, and taste come together to work for a common objective, a team is formed. Every individual contributes equally and performs his level best to meet the team targets and achieve the organization’s goal. Team members strive hard to live up to the expectations of others and successfully accomplish the assigned task. A team cannot do well unless and until each and every member is focused and serious about his responsibilities. For every team member, his team should come first and everything else later. Personal interests must take a backseat.
Every individual must feel motivated to perform his level best. Never impose things on anyone; instead, the individuals must take the initiative on their own. They should come forward and accept the challenge.
DEVELOPING TEAM RESOURCES
Each stage of team development presents its own special challenges to a group of people striving to work together successfully by forming a cohesive team.
The team and the organization can take specific actions at each stage of team development to support the team’s success in accomplishing the team mission. Only by supporting your teams through each stage of their development will you accomplish the purpose for which you formed the team.
Stages of Team Development
The following are the five stages of team development with suggested actions to best support the team.
Forming: a group of people comes together to accomplish a shared purpose. Their initial success will depend on their familiarity with each other's work style, their experience on prior teams, and the clarity of their assigned mission.
Storming: Disagreement about mission, vision, and ways to approach the problem or assignment are constant at this stage of development.
Norming: The team has consciously or unconsciously formed working relationships that are enabling progress on the team’s objectives. The members have consciously or unconsciously agreed to abide by certain group norms and they are becoming functional at working together.
Performing: Relationships, team processes, and the team’s effectiveness in working on its objectives are synching to bring about a successfully functioning team. This is the stage at which the real work of the team is progressing.
Transforming: The team is performing so well that members believe it is the most successful team they have ever experienced; or
Ending: The team has completed its mission or purpose and it is time for team members to pursue other goals or projects.
Designing Successful Team
The success of your business is based on teamwork by the parties involved. By working together, you can often accomplish more than when you work as individuals. So it is important that you use teams to accomplish business tasks.
To have a successful team, you must properly structure the team, and then you must select the right type of team to accomplish the task.

Not all teams are alike. The type of team you choose will influence how effectively you achieve your goals. Depending on the circumstances, choose the type of team that best fits the task you want to accomplish.
Elements of Successful Teams
PARTICIPATION AND REPERCUSSION
Two of the most important elements when it comes to effectively operating a team unit include participation methods and repercussions of team decisions.
You should have some idea at this point how much input you want your team members to have based upon your team goals, the individual benefits each team member brings to the table and most importantly how much decision making ability you want your team members to have. It becomes quite common and understandable that many managers and supervisors are hesitant to give too much latitude to team members when it comes to making decisions. After all, in most scenarios, if something goes awry is likely to be the manager or team leader who is judged responsible for the error and its results. Consequently, it becomes psychologically understandable for team leaders to insist upon making decisions themselves.
TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES
A team that works well together is more effective, more productive, and more successful — not to mention happier and more fun to work with! But team building at work can be tricky, especially when typical team building activities tend to induce more eye rolls among teammates than high-fives. Whether you were hired to put together some team building initiatives or you think your team just needs to get together and do something fun, workplace team building activities are the way to go.
Teams are more efficient and collaborative when they use Huddle. However, even the best teams can benefit from team building exercises; they're a great way of improving communication, morale, motivation, productivity, helping employees to get to know each other better, and learning about one’s strengths and weaknesses. Team building activities can be used by any business, large or small, to promote better teamwork in the workplace, and as most business owners and managers know, great teamwork is one of the key factors associated with a company’s success.
Create your Own Team Building Activities
The group leader should present participants with this fake problem: The hour was going to be spent doing a problem solving activity, but as the group leader- you don’t know any and you don’t want to do one that the participants have already heard or tried previously. The goal- or problem- then, is to have each group of participants come up with a new problem solving activity that they’ve invented themselves. Groups should be no larger than four or five people and at the end of the hour, each group must come up and present their new problem solving activity. Aside from being a problem solving activity in and of itself, this activity also promotes creativity, communication, trust, and time management, among other things.
