What does Baxter believe about grades & assessment?

4 of 9

Baxter’s Assessment Pedagogy

  • Baxter uses Proficiency-Based grading (aka Competency-Based grading):
    • Goals & Progress are transparent to kids, teachers, parents - no mysteries!
    • Assessment is about learning, not ranking students
  • Learning happens at different rates for different kids; our goal is for all kids to reach GB or beyond by spring of senior year in all standards
    • Students move through curricula at their own pace
  • Student Choice (within parameters) facilitates learning and cultivates passion in students
    • Our semester-long classes, and diversity of offerings ensure that Baxter students will get to make many choices about their pathway to graduation

How does Baxter grade student work?

6 of 9

There are 5 Grades at Baxter

EN = Entering (MOST 9th graders are here)

PR = Progressing (MOST 10th graders are here)

GB = Graduation Benchmark (MOST 11th & 12th graders are here; this is the level of proficiency required to earn a diploma)

AD = Advancing (this is roughly a college freshman level and represents MUCH independent work)

EX = Excelling (this is roughly a college sophomore)

BA = Beyond Assessment (this is a level of proficiency beyond EX and is VERY RARE)
