Costume is the fabrication of clothing for the overall appearance of a character or performer. Costumes is specific in the style of dress particular to a nation a class or a period. The most basic designs in costumes are produce to denote status provide protection, modesty or simple indication of culture.
Costumes are tools to express an art from or a belongingness . Such as a play or dance piece or opera. Costumes may for a theatre, cinema or musical performance but may not be limited to such four types of costumes are used in one clothing, historical fantastical, dance and modern history.
In Elizabethan time England during 1500-1600 costume became the important visual element garments were very expensive because only the finest fabrics were used . The majority were clothing Elizabethan fashion otherwise the costume could be divided into 5 categories-:

3. Gender Differentiation -: In most culture under gender differentiation of clothing is considered appropriate for men & women. The most important difference is that they have is the common idea of equality. Every culture have this thought that women should wear something more descent and that’s the reason there is a vast difference in the clothing of men & women while men can wear whatever they feel like in western societies , shirt, short dress & high heel shoes are usually seen as women’s clothing but now- a- days worn by both gender. Male clothes are after movie practical . But a wide range of clothing style are available for female now-a-days.
4. Nationality-: country you belong to another important aspect in the development of costumes is nationality. When a person regardless where he/she is living currently wear. 5. Traditional -: Traditions are the artificial beliefs put up by the humans these are passing costumes or beliefs from one generation to other generation. Almost every culture in the society, home their own traditions which effects the clothing is one way or other these beliefs & costumes are set rules according to which one clothes .
Traditions felt what should women wear & what should men wear on a particular occasion.
For eg: At the time of wedding in Indian culture bride wears red color . While in western culture bride wears white colors, in Indian traditional white is not considered a good color for bride & they avoid to wear white.
6. Class-: Class is a social rank in the society. class
Is status surely effects the clothing of their people in the societies .
Every individual wear different clothes according to their status or rank in the society upper class wear the most expensive one . While the working class or the average class wears more practical clothes. Elite people look for latest fashion in their clothes . While the working class look for more practical. Clothing for their daily work &duties approach for clothing is very different on every level of the society in every culture.
