THE SITUATION

  • Accelerating climate and ecosystem destruction
  • Fast approaching tipping points
  • Crumbling system
  • Global voices drowned out
  • Opportunity of upgrading democracy

14 of 40

PURPOSE

Extinction Rebellion is a mass movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience to demand action by UK Government on mass extinction and near-term social, ecological and climate breakdown.

15 of 40

VISION

We imagine a future where:

  • Humans recognise stop harm interconnectedness of life
  • Communities joyfully work together to adapt to change
  • Cultures are resilient, regenerative, and built on respect for one another, all other forms of life, and the planet that sustains us.
  • We accept the damage already done, our role in it and seek repair four relationship with nature.

16 of 40

OUR DEMANDS

We are in Rebellion until the Government responds.

  1. Government must TELL THE TRUTH by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
  2. Government must ACT NOW to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
  3. Government must create and be led by the decisions of a CITIZENS’ ASSEMBLY on climate and ecological justice.

17 of 40

THE TRUTH

Haven’t our Demands already been met? No.

  • Parliament’s declaration of a climate and environment emergency was symbolic and non-binding.
  • The Citizens’ Assembly announced by the Select Committees has a preset agenda, limited scope, inadequate timeline and is toothless - ‘recommendations only’.
  • The current net-zero climate legislation is set too late in 2050.
  • None of these act to halt biodiversity loss.
  • Nor do they act to ensure justice for those most affected planetwide.

18 of 40

OUR THEORY OF CHANGE

  • We need global change towards a new social and economic paradigm based on sufficiency and respect for our interdependence with the natural world.

  • To build a decentralised, resilient, mass movement which is non violent, disruptive, self-sacrificial and respectful.

  • Support the transformation of individuals and communities through support networks, grief work, connection fostering, self-organisation and deliberative democracy.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN POLITICS WHILST WE’RE ON THE STREETS?

  • Government, Parliament and the media remain transfixed by Brexit.
  • The political stalemate has resulted in the Climate and Ecological Emergency sliding off their agenda.
  • Parliament will be prorogued again for the first week of the rebellion.
  • The Queen’s Speech timetabled for Monday October 14th, where the government sets out its key policy objectives for the year.
  • Brexit demonstrates the failure of our political system - How will our existing setup deal with the complexity and catastrophe of the climate and ecological crisis?
  • Extinction Rebellion proposes an up-grade to our democracy
    • With ordinary Britons from all walks of life, with all their diversity of perspectives, come together in a National Citizen’s Assembly to determine the response to the real national Emergency.
  • We must place our trust in people..

“I’ve always looked back at say the civil rights movement in America and thought, who were the people who were aware that this was going on and left it to other people. And once I had that thought I found it very difficult to justify not being a part of this”

Louis Brijmohun, 25 from Sheffield

I have five grandchildren and when I got carried off I said to the tourists who were taking photos that I was doing this for my grandchildren. I feel frightened when I think about the climate emergency – I am frightened for my children and grandchildren. Even in my lifetime it is going to make a big difference."

Doro Marden, 71, retired adult education trainer from Primrose Hill, London.

“If it wasn’t for Extinction Rebellion I would be feeling like an alien. Everything else is out of synch with the reality of what's going on. Finding Extinction Rebellion – this is our hope. This is our courage.”

Alice Brown, 25, a mental health support worker from Bristol

“Last October, I woke up one fine morning, switched on the radio, and heard that we had 12 years left. I had led a carefree life up until then, but the idea of being carefree was no longer a thing. I have never been an activist and I’d usually just stay on the sidelines, but when the swarm happened, I swarmed as well, and I have never felt more right, in my life. Our parents generation feared enemy action. Our children’s generation fear innaction. And the actions that we have taken this year have been more vital than anything.”

Tom Hardy, 65, semi-retired teacher and academic writer, Islington, London

We can’t save the world by playing by the rules. Because the rules have to be changed. Everything needs to change. And it has to start today. So everyone out there: it is now time for civil disobedience. It is time to rebel.

Greta Thunberg, school kid and activist
