Elements of ERM

What does the work look like?

6 of 35

Electronic Resource Management (ERM)

Solving E-resource challenges requires a kaleidoscope of :

  • Perspectives
  • Experience
  • New skills
  • User feedback

Build a network of trust between colleagues from many areas of work.

What is it?

Technical aspects of Solving E-resource challenges

Bridges the gap between systems, vendors and users

Requires investigating many Library Mysteries

Patterns in Library Mysteries

Merged Records

  • Similarities in Metadata
  • Duplicates (Functional Reqs Bib Records)
  • Risk of merged records if we try to remove records

Gaps in User Understanding

  • Item Landing Page (PDF)
  • Access Button record
  • Login/Get it issues
  • Ebook access-check out/login

Incorrect Records from GTI

  • Non CSUSM access
  • Incomplete citation
  • Many records for similar items

Patterns of Library Mysteries

CDI Linking Issues

  • Error in EzProxy
  • Incorrect Metadata
  • Impact search results order

Date Range

  • Journals showing ongoing access, no current access
  • Incorrect date range-resubmit search

Open Access

  • Links to non-open access
  • Incorrect DOI or broken DOI
  • Partial open access Journal marked OA

Each Ticket Requires Collaboration

  • Clarify the need with user
  • Verify the workflow in another department
  • Make change in ALMA/Primo
  • Write to outside Manager NZ
  • Submit a Ticket with Vendor
  • Contact support from other platforms

*These situations uncover underlying issues requiring larger project

Invisible Labor

If we were maintaining a physical collection, it would be clearer the scope of the work but growing digital collections make it

-Garcia-Olvera, B., & Vargas, C. G.

Human Input

Requires upkeep, feedback, training, trouble shooting, strategic planning and applied understanding

Changing Library Catalog

What’s in a name

13 of 35

What is the CSUSM Library Catalog?

A: Record of items owned by the library including access points

B: Pamphlet that comes in the mail selling books

C: Aggregator of metadata from millions of records from a variety of sources

D: Complete collection of songs by musician

Answer in Chat

14 of 35

From Repository to Aggregator

  • Many Library catalogs have moved beyond repository
  • Now include metadata for material to be purchased or secured by resource sharing
  • Expanded Access
  • User informed collections

GTI-Scope

The Global Title Index is an aggregator of metadata. It allows access to the collection of any institution that has Rapido, it also allows us to complete Interlibrary loan through Rapido. Many libraries have access to over 1 million items.

CDI-Scope

Central Discovery Index is an indexing tool for scholarly and academic material worldwide. Includes subscribed, purchase, Open Access items. Contains mostly metadata and constantly Ingests information, represents over 5 billion items and alternate access options.

Values Approach to ERM

Being “Human Centered” managing electronic resources

17 of 35

What values apply to ERM work?

Answer in the chat

18 of 35

Filling the Gap…

EResources Function Use

19 of 35

  • Provide shared language for colleagues
  • Draws attention to invisible labor
  • Show value of e-resources

Educates/Advocates

  • There is not always an easy or clear answer
  • Sometimes vendors take time to fix issues

Ambiguity

  • Balancing many different types of work
  • Understanding what is possible and a request

Flexibility

20 of 35

  • Value many forms of expertise
  • Model Reference Behavior

Consider Other’s Views

  • Takes time to build trust
  • Patience
  • Slow down to find comprehensive solutions

Relationships

  • Written & verbal
  • Take into account different styles
  • Many audiences

Communication

Primo Records

Primo records are generated as the system searches

In order to generate a record:

  • Harvesting-Searches and locates materials

  • Dedup- Merges records and FRBR

  • Brief Display Construction- identifies material type

  • Fully Display & Record Details-Attempts to identify and provide access points

Internal Education Effort:

Strategies

“We focus more on getting things done than on getting the right things done.”

-Slow librarianship

27 of 35

Building a Web

Strategies:

  • Trouble shooting and support to build trust
  • Communication and documentation
  • Integration with Consortia colleagues
  • Consideration of many work styles
  • Building Connection w/colleagues
  • Coffee walk, lunch, walk n’ talk
  • Commit to Curiosity (Tiny Experiments)
  • Coordinate workflow across many functions
  • Take the time to ask or admit, “I don’t know”

*All with the goal of partnership

“Future success in ERM will depend on deeper collaboration across libraries, consortia, and vendors. Libraries should continue to pool expertise, negotiate shared agreements, and develop joint repositories and knowledge bases.”

Let’s talk about it!

33 of 35

Discussion Questions:

Who are your main collaborators?

Who makes your work possible?

Who is missing from your ecosystem?

What are some past interdisciplinary projects? What might be possible?

Who Across Campus or the CSU is doing parallel work?
