Flexible Seating ( A work in progress)

What the research says… “Brain research also confirms that physical activity – moving, stretching, and walking – can actually enhance the learning process. Eric Jensen (2000), in his article Moving with the Brain in Mind, protests against the sedentary classroom style and suggests a better way to spend the long days in our classrooms, not only for students, but for teachers. Teachers need to engage students in a greater variety of postures, including walking, lying down, moving, learning against a wall or desk, perching, or even squatting. The brain learns best and retains most when the organism is actively involved in physical activity.” (Jimenez, 2016)

Here is an excellent article that describes the benefits of flexible seating: https://www.edutopia.org/.../flexible-seating-student-centered-classroom-kayla-delzer

Stocklmeir Homework Practices

  • Student learning is assessed based on proficiency demonstrated in class.
  • Unfinished classwork can be completed at home, but students are only graded on the portion completed at school.
  • Teachers have discretion to recommend supplemental resources based on individual student needs. For example, teachers can recommend outside activities to prepare for tests, presentations, or projects.
  • To prepare for the transition to middle school, 4th and 5th-grade students are expected to dedicate 30 to 60 minutes of daily after-school time in order to foster behaviors that support learning. The intent is to provide students with increased opportunities to set and reflect upon their individual goals. Teachers will communicate the specifics of these practices at the beginning of the school year.

Learning, just like anything else, requires practice!!

Resources to Support Learning at Home (access through Clever)

What this could look like in the classroom...

      • Students are given time each day to reflect on and discuss what they learned, and then, set next steps to meet their goals.

      • Students will track their goals and plans in their planners each day.

      • Students may be provided differentiated resources to support learning, based on teacher discretion.

How can parents support students’ learning?

  • Encourage hard work, not just results
  • Have your child teach you what they know
  • Students learn by explaining
  • Probe their understanding, challenge them to explain their reading, thinking, etc.
  • Help students monitor long-term projects and deadlines
  • Reward independent effort, but listen to questions, guide their thinking, not give them answers
