Have students look at the image. Ask what they think it might be.

Explain we have a calendar that we follow. 2020 just ended! We are in January which is the first month of the year.

This is the calendar for our Church- it is the liturgical year. It is based on “seasons”.

The start of the Church’s new year is the period before Christmas.

See if students can remember what it is called.

Ask students what they notice.

Point out the holidays.

Start with Advent and go over each piece of the “Liturgical Year”

*Advent is 1st season. 4 Sundays in Advent. Colors are purple and pink.

*Christmas marks the Christmas season (lasts until the Jesus’ Baptism in January). Colors are white or gold.

*Ordinary Time begins in January and lasts until Lent. The second season of “Ordinary Time” is after Pentecost. Color is green.

*Lent is very important time. It is 40 days long. Starts with Ash Wednesday and eds on Easter. Color is purple.

*Easter is the most important celebration in our Church. It is the celebration of Jesus rising from the dead. Color is white.

Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit appeared to Jesus’ disciples. It was when the Church was born. The color is red.
