Standardized Pricing

Cons: operational complexity (monitoring 100+ price points), grey-market risk (parallel imports from low-price to high-price markets), internal political friction between regional teams. Mitigation strategies: product versioning, regional locks, and contractual grey-market prevention agreements with distributors.
The Price Escalation Problem in Export Pricing
Price escalation is one of the most common and costly problems in international pricing. It occurs when a product's final consumer price in an export market is dramatically higher than the domestic price — not because the company is greedy, but because of cumulative cost additions at every stage of the international value chain.
The escalation chain: Ex-factory price → freight and insurance (CIF) → import duties and customs fees → port handling and clearance costs → importer/distributor margin (typically 20–35%) → wholesaler margin (15–25%) → retailer margin (30–50%) → VAT and local consumption taxes. In some markets, a product priced at $10 factory gate arrives at the consumer shelf at $28–35 — a 180–250% escalation.
