How Types of Studies play a role

  • Every Study has different methods of measuring aggression
  • Just because a game is violent does not mean aggression will increase. The objective in the game matters.
  • Arguments in flaws over studies of the link between video games and aggression

Should Violent Video Games Be Banned?

  • There is no connection in these video games towards violent behavior in people.
  • It may persuade them to become violent or give them some sort of bad influence.
  • The constitution allows video game companies to make video games because of free speech.

Video Games Vs. the Past

  • Before there was electricity, there were still wars and aggression.
  • If there wasn’t any video games in the past, where do people get the motivation to do become violent.
  • This rules out that video games make people violent.

"Do Violent Video Games Cause Violence in Kids?"

PRO Contribute to Youth Violence

CON Contribute to Youth Violence

Increasing reports of bullying can be partially attributed to the popularity of violent video games. The 2008 study Grand Theft Childhood reported that 60% of middle school boys who played at least one Mature-rated game hit or beat up someone, compared to 39% of boys that did not play Mature-rated games.

A casual link between violent video games and violent behavior has not been proven. Violent games do not cause youth to be violent. Instead, youth that are predisposed to be violent seek out violent entertainment such as video games.

Video games often reward players for simulating violence, and thus enhance the learning of violent behaviors. Studies suggest that when violence is rewarded in video games, players exhibit increased aggressive behavior.

Violent juvenile crime in the United States has been declining as violent video game popularity has increased. The arrest rate for juvenile murders has fallen 71.9% between 1995 and 2008. The arrest rate for all juvenile violent crimes has declined 49.3%. In this same period, video game sales have more than quadrupled.

  • In defense of video game publishers, there is a visible rating system used on games. This is similar to the rating system for movies. This gives parents an insight into a game's contents before purchase.Ultimately, the decision lies in the parent's hands. They are responsible for what they allow their children to play or watch. If they do not feel their child is mature enough to play a game, then they can make the decision to not allow them to have it.
  • While it is true that kids are influenced by what they are exposed to, if a child has no natural violent tendencies, then playing a game should not cause violence. If a child is already violent beyond normal measures, then perhaps their parents should be careful not to expose them to any more violence. This responsibility still lies in the hands of parents.
