  • Preschool/kindergarten – aged 6/7
  • Primary school age 6/7 – 14/15

- vocational schools: shop-assisstants, hairdressers, mechanics, nurses, drivers …–3 years

  • Secondary school - gimnazija – general, linguistic, mathematical,

natural sciences, technical – prepare students for

further study i.e. university – lasts 4 years

- technical schools, music, economic, nurses and

similar last 4 years

  • Matura state exit exam – obligatory for gimnazija students and those who aim to study at university

    • Consists of three compulsory subjects: Croatian, Mathematics and foreign language
    • and as many optional subjects as you want – may help you qualify better for university

  • University - in the old system – 4 years

- the new Bologna system – either 3 years or 5 years

          • some studies last 5 or even 6 years, e.g. medicine, law

  • Post graduate studies:
    • Master’s and Doctoral degrees – last 2 years each, you need to do your thesis (MA/MSc, Phd)

  • Public primary and secondary schools, as well as institutions of higher education, are tuition-free.
  • Students only pay for textbooks, basic equipment, cafeteria food, student dorms and other necessities.
  • The state gives thousands of scholarships each year.
  • The state pays health insurance for students.
  • There are very few private schools in the country.

  • Education in Croatia has a long history, with the first university being University of Zadar, founded in 1396.
  • The largest and oldest continuously operating Croatian university is University of Zagreb, founded in 1669.
  • Today, there are 940 primary and 390 secondary schools, as well as 90 public and 32 private higher education institutions in Croatia

  • The new Curricular reform that Croatia is going through – central point is on the outcomes of teaching – sources of learning may be different but must satisfy the set outcomes

  • More and more stress is put on student creativity,
    • critical thinking,
    • logical thinking,
    • research-based learning,
    • working in groups, teams,
    • recognising individual styles of learning of each student,
    • recognising student learning difficulties,
    • develping the whole student – rational and emotional, responsible, social human being, not just intellectual.
