MyEd App: Essential for all parents

31 of 47

Internet / mobile safety at CGA

The internet should be a fun place for all children. For the internet to be fun, it also must be safe.

Many of your children may be receiving their first phone over the coming months to help prepare them for secondary school, this can be a tricky time where children navigate what is ok and what isn't. Your input is key here!

32 of 47

Friends v Followers

We don't want our students to be contacted online by people they don't know.

  • Accounts needs to be locked to 'private'.
  • Each app has different privacy settings.
  • No personal information to be made public
  • Only 'friend' or 'follow' people known in real life.
  • Block people if needed and take screenshots of anything concerninghttps://www.internetmatters.org/

    • 'Indirect' comments.
    • AI/Deep fakes
    • Group chats / exclusion from chats.
    • Continuing problems from school.
    • Sense of anonymity / no sense of repercussion.
  • Inappropriate images.
  • Report to the academy immediately.

Content: Apps to watch out for.

  • Apps that have anonymous messaging systems.
  • Apps that allow in-game purchasing.
  • Apps that allow disappearing messages.
  • Apps that are based on live-streamed videos.

36 of 47

Why is my child on their phone so much?

  • Apps and platforms are addictive.
  • Too much use can lead to emotional difficulties:
    • Feeling sad if they're not on the phone.
    • Feeling angry if the phone is taken away.
    • Comparing their lives with other peoples 'filtered' lives.
    • Not being able to escape from ongoing issues
  • Interruptions from notifications is linked with attention difficulties.

37 of 47

Conduct

  • Digital life part of children's lives.
  • Using devices healthily
    • Restrictions on total screen time.
  • Good routines.
    • No phone during home-learning time.
    • 'Cut off' time for the whole family.
    • All phones into parents' bedroom at bedtime.
  • Your contract or internet provider can support with instructions locking apps and putting limits on services.

It’s a good idea to discuss and agree on mobile phone rules with your child.

These might be rules about what she can use her phone for, where and when she can use it, and how much she can spend on usage.

Here are some examples of mobile phone rules to consider:

  • What: your child can and can’t use the phone for? E.g. downloading films, sharing photos
  • Where: Family areas of the house? Walking on the street? In her room?
  • When: Before school? After school? Not between 8pm and 7am?

Rules for mobile phone use

Mobile phones at CGA

  • Switched off and put away at all times when on site.
  • Phones will be confiscated if seen or heard.
  • Parents will need to collect confiscated devices

Things to consider when buying a device:

  • Which phone to get? – Does your child need internet access?
  • Check for adult content filters, privacy settings and set up parental controls on your home broadband.
  • Choosing a network – some tariffs offer family plans and safety features.
  • Agree when and how will be used – student/parent contract- the parent owns the phone and are allowing the child to use it

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Form classes:
  • What criteria was used for making the classes?  We use a complex system of ensuring there is a balance and equal spread of primaries in each form. This year we decided not to have a best friend request as it often creates issues and there are many students arriving on their own who would love to make new friends too. Parent feedback (from parent survey) says it is better to not put students in groups with best friends from primary school as this limits opportunity for forming new friendships.
  • Maths groups Students will be in form classes at the start to ensure that everybody has an opportunity to demonstrate their ability. Students will be put into ability groups following informal assessments in class.
  • Medication:
  • Can students' medication be administered in school? Yes, we need a medical note and we will request more information in September. Students will take medication at student reception

Frequently Asked Questions

  • KS2 Data:
  • How does benchmarking work this year, when children have been out of school for such extended periods?  While we will use CATs results as a benchmark to assess student progress, we will combine this with our own professional judgement to decide whether these scores reflect what students are capable of achieving. Crucially, all lessons apart from maths are in mixed ability grouping and our focus is on challenging all students to reach their potential.
  • Contact details:
  • Is it possible to have the contact details of students who live nearby? We are unable to share this information due to General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
