Engage: Play the simon says game with the Simon Says Cards. Have the students act out the different motions. Don’t tell them what the the jump action does and tell them they will figure that one out themselves.
1
Introduce: Show them how to open Scratch Jr. and get a new project. Show the sample project and tell them that the name of his dance “The hoppy head dance” or whatever you want to call your dance. .
2
Model: Ask them if they know what is missing from the code. Remind them of the Simon Says game so that they remember that it needs a flag to start and model how you hook on the flag and then press the flag at the top to start the code.
4
Model: Ask them what do you think each of the motion blocks will do. Show how you pull them out and click on the motion. Then show them them how to click them together like a puzzle.
3
Model: Have students close their eyes and picture what they want their character to do. Have them think what blocks they would need. Ask them what would they name their dance. Have them go back to their seat and code tic to dance.
5
Share and Debrief: As you are walking around ask students to tell you what their code does and have them point to the different parts of their algorithm and ask what the name of the dance is. Have students get up and look at a few of the other dances. Then ask them to tell something that they liked about a project they saw.
