WHAT IS AN AI ROBOT CAR?

  • A robot car, (also known as the self-driving car) is a battery-powered vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and moving with no human input.

  • Autonomous cars combine a variety of sensors to perceive their surroundings, such as radar, computer vision, proximity, sonar, GPS, infra-red. Advanced control systems interpret sensory information to identify appropriate navigation paths, as well as obstacles and relevant signage.

KEY PHYSICAL COMPONENTS OF AN AI ROBOT CAR

  • Radar / Proximity Sensor (Bumpers, Undersides): They are used to monitor the positions of the car, and obstacle avoidance. They are sent as pulse of radio waves which detect short & long range depth. They are also used detect the changes in terrain, so that the car changes its wheel height to go off-road.
  • Ultrasonic sensor (Fenders): Uses high-frequency sound waves and bounce-back to calculate distance, best in close range. This sensor is used to measure the position of objects such as curbs and other vehicles when parking.
  • 10B analogue array board (Undersides): The 10B analogue sensor is used to detect the lines in the roads, which forms a pathway for the car to go by. It uses a series of IR transceivers which sends and receives pulses of IR radiation.
  • GPS and Mobile Data (Roof): An antennae will be used. The GPS triangulates position of car using satellites. The mobile data is used to connect to the internet. They are useful when you research on places where you want to visit. Mobile data would come in handy when it comes to communication with other devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches and other devices.

KEY PHYSICAL COMPONENTS OF AN AI ROBOT CAR

  • Gyroscope (inside): This is used detect angular velocity. This is used as a precaution when going off-road. Such alarming accidents will be reduced, when travelling in an inclined ground.
  • Flexible wheels: Both the front wheels and the back wheels turn. This is capable of turning about the reference point at the centre the car. All 4 wheels have individual motors connected to it. Variable wheel heights are used. They automatically change using proximity sensors. Flexible wheels are only useful, when it comes to off-road use and going through tight areas.
  • Smart lock (Doors, and trunks): Used for security reasons. They use biometric sensors (for e.g. Face ID, fingerprint). Apps in smartphones can also be used. These doors and trunks open and close mechanically using motors.
  • Video camera (interior ceiling): Provide real-time obstacle detection to facilitate lane departure and track roadway information (like road signs).
  • Central Computer (interior): It is responsible for receiving information from various components and helps direct vehicle overall. All the logics and decisions are carried out by this embedded computer. It also features a UI and a voice-activated artificial assistant for user interaction.

THE VERDICT

  1. Risk of hacking. Many hackers can hack the program, by which the vehicle would be running. They can give wrong destinations, or somehow, the vehicle can easily be stolen.
  2. Concerns about the resulting loss of driving-related jobs in the road transport industry
  3. If the program is coded with mistakes, the car would not function properly and cause accidents. This can also give wrong destinations, etc.
  4. Roads and infrastructure need to be modified for these vehicles, which would take time and effort. Otherwise, complex calibrations are required.

  1. Reduced costs, increased safety, increased mobility, increased customer satisfaction and reduced crime.
  2. Automated cars are predicted to increase traffic flow, without any hassle
  3. Provide enhanced mobility for children, the elderly, disabled, and the poor
  4. Relieve travelers from driving and navigation chores
  5. lower fuel consumption
  6. Significantly reduces needs for parking space
  7. reduce crime
