David A. Reimann

  • Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Albion College, Michigan.
  • Combines mathematical concepts with visual representations in his artwork.
  • Uses patterns, symmetry, and repetition to convey mathematical ideas.
  • Reimann's works explore abstract mathematical concepts (like numbers, shapes, and processes) in visual form.

Class Activity

Create Your Own Symmetrical Pattern

  • Materials Needed: Paper, pencils or markers.
  • Instructions:
    • List 10 main life events in order of importance
    • Pick a simple shape (e.g., a circle, square, triangle).
    • The size of each shape represents how important that event was in your life.
    • Draw that shape several times, using rotational symmetry in a way that creates a symmetrical.
    • For example, start by drawing one shape in the middle of the paper, then repeat the shape around a central point like the petals of a flower.
    • The final piece and its shape should represent something important to you.
    • Hint: Use pairs of shape sizes
    • Advanced: Combine multiple shapes
  • Objective: Understand how symmetry and repetition can create complex designs from simple shapes, similar to Reimann's 143 Hearts or Many Moons, and can help deliver visual representations of real-life ideas.
