Notes for teachers

  • This lesson can be completed over a span of several days to better fit your students’ needs.
  • Students will work in several different formats to complete the assignments and activities.

  • Comprehension passage Earthworms Do Good Work
  • Sentence pattern chart
  • Earthworm BOOGALOO
  • Red Wiggler worms
  • Three 5 gallon buckets
  • Drill (teacher completes without students)
  • Soil and scraps for compost bin
  • Measuring devices
  • Ozobot, Ozobot Codes, and student map

Objective(s):

Buy the end of the lessons, students will be able to:

  • How worms turn trash into soil
  • The importance of saving scraps for composting and how it can affect the community by reducing trash
  • The parts of a worm and its many jobs
  • Estimate the length of a worm and be able to measure it using the appropriate measurement
  • Code an Ozobot to travel through the course
  • Discuss with peers and adults the importance of worms for soil and gardens using grade level academic vocabulary

  • Have students participate in creating a KWL chart to build on background knowledge
  • Watch the video Save the Scrap reference KWL chart and add to the L section after
  • Additional videos to view: How Compost is Made
  • Have students read/sing the Earthworm BOOGALOO this will help build a common understanding and language acquisition
  • Pictorial Input: create a student friendly diagram with parts of a worm

  • Set up worm exploration station to add to 5 gallon compost bins
  • Ozobot coding and exporation

Intro/Driving Question/Opening

  • How do worms turn trash into soil?
  • Why might someone want earthworms in their garden?
  • How do earthworms help plants grow?
  • How do earthworms turn our kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich soil?
  • How long is an earthworm, and how can we estimate its length without measuring tools?

Hands-on Activity Instructions

  • Several of these activities will be completed as a whole group.
  • Have students stand in their own space to read and do the motions for the BOOGALOO. Movements along with the chant will help student acquire knowledge along with the movemements.
  • Have students sit near the sentence pattern chart so that they can easily move when it is their turn to participate.
  • Exploration Stations: group students into small groups 2-3 for worm and compost exploration. This will help with management.
  • Ozobots: Students independently create their own course with their Ozobot.

ELA - Students will independently complete the reading comprehension passage Earthworms Do Good Work

Math - Students will independently complete the math measurement worksheet Math Assessment

Differentiation

  • Both assessments may be read aloud to students in a small groups based on students needs.
  • Students may also work together to complete the hands on group learning for coding their Ozobots.
  • Create small groups for creating the compost bins based on your classroom management style and needs.

Remediation

Extension/Enrichment

  • Have students code their Ozobots using a specific amount of certain codes.
