A Peek At What We Are Learning

A Note From

Mrs. Logisz

Reading: The first graders performed “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” to the other first grade classroom! We had a lot of fun using expression and making a story come to life through reader’s theater!

Writing: The first graders are finishing up our opinion writing unit. We have focused on choosing a favorite game, restaurant, vacation or even movie to write an opinion about and try to convince our readers!

Math: During workshop we are revisiting addition and subtraction games. We are working on explaining our counting strategies when finding out the solution. The first graders are working on problems with unknown change (7+__=10) and naming their counting strategies. We are starting our new unit about collecting and analyzing data.

Phonics: We have been practicing our snap words and giving ourselves “snap word check-ups” by sorting through which ones we know and which ones need a little bit more work. We will begin our next unit on Monday!

A Peek At What We Are Learning

A Note From

Mrs. Logisz

Reading: The first graders learned about Reader’s Theater. We are practicing to use expression and study character feelings so that we know how to become the character.

Science: The first graders ended their science unit by creating a sound source to go along with their light sources they created for the puppet theater company.

Writing: The first graders are writing about their opinions and focusing on how to create a catchy introduction to hook their readers. They are asking questions to make their reader wonder, naming their topic and/or starting by saying their opinion in the introduction.

Math: During workshop we are revisiting addition and subtraction games. We are working on explaining our counting strategies when finding out the solution. The first graders are working on problems with unknown change (7+__=10) and naming their counting strategies.

Reading: The first graders are are practicing their reading stamina. They are also practicing reading and writing snap words and using them in a sentence.

Science: The first graders explored different sound sources and learned about vibrations. They will plan a design and create a sound source of their own!

Writing: The first graders are practicing writing their opinions on places and things. They are focusing on adding reasons to support their opinion and adding “sparkly” words to their stories.

Math: During workshop we are revisiting addition and subtraction games. We are working on explaining our counting strategies when finding out the solution. The first graders are also working on counting collections.

Reading: The first graders are studying character feelings. In our small reading groups we are having chats about how the character feelings change from the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Science: We are learning how to be sound engineers for our science unit. The first graders are learning about different sound sources.

Writing: The first graders are learning how to be review writers. They are writing their opinion on places such as restaurants and vacations and/or things like movies, games and toys.

Reading: The first graders are learning how to bring their books to life. We read “There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly” and created our own puppets to act out the story!

Science: We are light and sound engineers! We are learning how to make a surface bright and dark. The first graders explored with many materials such as foam, foil and cardboard to see which materials made a dark shadow, bright area or a medium area.

Writing: The first graders are learning how to create an opinion by writing reviews. They are writing about their collections and explaining which item would come in first, second, third...etc and giving many reasons to support their opinion.

Math: During workshop we are playing games such as Tens Go Fish and building our fluency with exploring and learning combinations of 10. The first graders are also working on counting collections.

Science: We are light and sound engineers! We are learning how to make a surface bright and dark. The first graders explored how to create a shadow on a surface using a flashlight as a light source.

Writing: The first graders are learning how to create an opinion by writing reviews. They are writing about their collections and explaining which item would come in first, second, third...etc and giving many reasons to support their opinion.

Writing: The first graders are working on using comparisons in their writing. They are also working on going back to revise their writing.

Phonics: The first graders are learning strategies to read and write long and tough words. They are learning that for each syllable in a word, there must be a vowel. The first graders are practicing this skill by rereading their writing stories and revising.

Writing: The first graders are working on adding a table of contents to their nonfiction chapter books. They are also focusing on using comparisons in their writing.

Math: The first graders are measuring and comparing the lengths of pictures of fish and solving comparison problems during workshop time. We are also working on telling time to the hour.

Writing: The first graders are starting to write nonfiction chapter books. We are studying published texts and learning how to make our own table of contents for our stories.

Math: The first graders started a new math unit about measurement and comparing lengths of objects. We are using tools such as string and counting cubes to measure objects and compare lengths.

Reading: We practiced our sight words. The first graders also learned more about words that contain vowel teams like “see” and “out” and were on the lookout for words that have vowel teams in their independent reading.

Science: The first graders wrapped up their plant and animal unit by creating models of animals and explaining the defense the animal uses to survive. The first graders presented their models to the kindergartners!

Writing: We finished our How-To Writing stories! The first graders can take their stories home and complete any unfinished stories at home and share them with you!

Math: We are learning how to solve and prove if equations are true or false. The first graders are continuing to practice showing their thinking by using counting strategies.

Phonics: We are studying words and learning about short vowels and long vowels. We are on the lookout for the Sneaky E!

Science: We are learning about plants and animals and their offspring. We are learning how the animals/plants take care of their offspring and how they can grow up learning how to defend themselves from predators.

Writing: We are working hard on our how to stories. We are planning our stories by touching and telling, sketching our pages then writing. We are working with our partners to help us think of ideas to add to our how to stories.

Math: We are solving put together story problems with multiple addends ( 4+4+3= ___). We are practicing our counting strategies to share our thinking with others.

Reading: As Word Detectives, we are learning how to take a closer look at words.. We are learning about vowel teams, contractions and compound words.

Phonics: We are studying words and turning new words into snap words. We are also working on contractions and learning how an apostrophe can disguise two snap words (don’t- do and not).

Science: We are learning how animals defend themselves from predators using structures on their bodies such as shells, spikes and/or camouflage. We are making our own models to show our learning using materials such as clay, erasers and toothpicks to model the structures.

Writing: We are working hard on our how to stories. We are including labels and diagrams in our pictures to include even more teaching and directions in our how-to stories.

Math: We are solving put together story problems with both addends unknown to determine one or more combinations/solutions. ( __+__=7).

Phonics: We finished our first unit in phonics by having a graduation to celebrate everything we learned about letters, sounds and words! We celebrated our power to read super-hard words by partner reading with a new shared reading text and studying new words!

Writing: We have finished our small moment writing unit. We celebrated being small moment story writers by publishing one of our small moment stories!

Math: We are exploring with our shape tools to see different ways to combine and create shapes using other shapes.

Reading: We are Word Detectives! We have received many missions from the Super Secret Detective Agency (S.S.D.A). We are using our good reading habits to solve tricky words using our detective tools like our magnifying glasses and brain power!

Phonics: We started our new phonics unit about the mystery of the silent E! We are learning how the Sneaky E is at the end of a word and doesn’t make a sound and it can change the “a” to a long sound (tap- tape)

Science: We started our Plant and Animal Defenses Unit. We will be aquarium scientists as we investigate and discuss about how Spruce the sea turtle will survive using her structures when she leaves the aquarium to live in the ocean.

Math: We practiced counting collections this week. We counted objects such as pumpkin erasers, seashells and even toy dinosaurs. We shared our counting strategies and used number paths as tools.

Reading: We are working on our reading stamina! We are focusing at our table spots, practicing our good reading habits and reading just-right books. We even had a King and Queen of Stamina this week!

Phonics: We are learning about how snap words can be power words! A snap word can be a power word if you can make even more words from it. We learned the word “up” is very teeny but very powerful because we can make words like “pup” and “cup” from it.

Writing: We are learning how to use craft moves in our small moment stories such as uses ellipses to build excitement, pop-out words to show the readers to read in a strong voice and telling in exact actions.

Math: We are learning about hexagons, trapezoids and rhombuses. We are exploring with our shape tools to see different ways to combine and create shapes using other shapes.
