Background Information

What is type 2 diabetes?

There are three main types of diabetes; type 1, type 2, and gestational.

However, type 2 diabetes is the most common type as there are about 29 million people in the U.S. who have this type. In type 2 diabetes, the body either prevents the effects of insulin or does not produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels.

COVID-19 and Diabetes

COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus.

Individuals with diabetes tend to be more vulnerable to becoming seriously ill with the said virus.

Hence, if people with diabetes develop a viral infection, it can be more difficult to treat due to changes in blood glucose levels and, the occurrence of diabetes complications.

Causes

of type 2 diabetes

People with type 2 diabetes make insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, but their cells do not use it as well as they should.

At first, the pancreas generates more insulin to try to acquire glucose into your cells. However, it can't keep up, and the glucose piles up in your blood instead.
