Choosing the Research topic

1. Problem should be current one or old unsolved one
2. Proper database is key for research.
3. We also need to explore the possibility of collecting data for our work.
4. It is very important to focus on problem rather than solution with known approach.
5. Research should add new knowledge it need not have all positive results.
6. Research should be useful for society.
7. My research area is speech applications in Indian context, as potential need is there for it.

Methods explored by my team:

My core research is combination of signal processing as well as deep learning approaches to build speech processing applications.

Main focus is on speech applications in Indian languages, where databases are not available.

Attention approaches for LID, multilingual ASR for Indian languages etc proposed by our team

Issues faced in research

Lack of databases (We collected database and made it open)

Computation power (Google cloud may be explored)

New ideas (Most of them came by focusing on problem)

Comparing with baseline results (Replicating their experimental setup)

Writing the thesis or paper properly by addressing reviewer comments. (Enough time need to be allotted for same)

Tips and Suggestions of research

1. If database freely available it is important to see what are all results on that already published. There should be enough scope to improve the result.
2. If database not available, collect the data in standard way and make it open after preliminary experiments.
3. Identifying good labs across the world who are working on research problem you selected and following them for updates.
4. Review papers from experts will give good idea on exisitng solutions
5. Read papers only from good and top forums like IEEE or ACM or Sciencedirect or springer or arXiv. Journal vs conference.

6. Top labs also help to know top forums to read or publish work.

7. Reading and writing paper is an art, it needs special efforts to get it.

8. Research degree just licence to do research, real research will come after spending 10-15 years in one research area.

9. Research is different types, experimental or application oriented, theoretical oriented or analysis oriented.
