Compression Software

Compression software reduces the size of a file. There are two types of compression – Lossy and Lossless

10

Lossy means some quality is lost: images, videos, music etc

Lossless is used when there cannot be a loss in quality:text files, spreadsheets, databases etc

11 of 19

Why compress?

It reduces the file size, freeing up more space on your secondary storage

It means files can be uploaded and downloaded more quickly over the internet.

11

Sometimes there is a limit in file size you can send over the internet. If you have a 15MB photograph and your e-mail attachment limit is 10MB, you will need to compress it.
