Population Growth

  • Population – the total number of people who live in a specified area.

  • The population of the Earth is now over 7 Billion*
    • (The book gives you an older number of 6 Billion.)

  • Important factors in population growth.
    • Increases in food production
    • Discoveries in medical sciences
    • Improvements in sanitation

Population Growth

  • Geographers use the following formula to determine population growth.
    • Birth rate minus death rate = rate of natural increase.
    • Birth rate is the number born per 1,000.
    • Death rate is the number of deaths per 1,000.

  • Very high rate of natural increases in most of Asia, Africa, and South America.

  • Lower in Europe, North America, and Japan.

Population Distribution and Density

  • Where people choose to live is partly affected by climate, elevation, and resources.

  • Only a small portion of the earth is suitable for humans to live.
    • 75% covered in water.
    • 35-40% of land is too hot, too cold, too wet, or too dry for large-scale population centers.

  • Most people live between 20° - 60° in northern hemisphere.

Population Distribution and Density

  • There is less land available in the southern hemisphere.

  • The edges of continents are more heavily populated than are the inland parts.
    • 2/3 of the Earth’s population lives within 300 miles of ocean waters.

  • About half of the world’s population live in urban or suburban areas.
    • Approximately 100 years ago, only 14% lived in cities.

  • Estimated by 2030, 60% will live in urban areas.

Population Distribution and Density

  • Geographers who study characteristics of human populations are called demographers.
