Pastor Alex S. Leung
SCRIPTURE READING 讀經
Psalm 23

A sheep is among the most disoriented of creatures on earth.
Charles Spurgeon:
A sheep is one of the most unwise of creatures. It will go anywhere except in the right direction.
Left to itself, it would not know in what pasture to feed in summer or where to retire in winter.
BIG IDEA:
Yahweh is your Shepherd, and that name—fulfilled in Jesus—means every promise in this Psalm comes from a God who cannot run dry, cannot fail, and will never let you go.
Overview
1. THE NAME: Who He Is—"The LORD" (v. 1a)
23:1 The LORD is my shepherd...
(Yahweh)
1a. The God of the Burning Bush
1a. The God of the Burning Bush
The burning bush burns with no wood. Yahweh loves with no depletion. He gives with no loss. He shepherds with no exhaustion.
1b. Biblical Context
Every phrase carries the weight of Israel’s entire wilderness history. This is not a nature poem. It is a covenant memory—David recalling what God has always been for his people, and claiming it for himself.
1b. Biblical Context
1. “I shall not want” (v. 1)「
2. “Green pastures” (v. 2)「
1b. Biblical Context
4. “Still waters” (v. 2)「
5. “For his name’s sake” (v. 3)「
6. “You prepare a table” (v. 5)「
1b. Biblical Context
In Psalm 22, the righteous sufferer cries out: part verbal question and part emotional expression.
The Shepherd of Psalm 23 is the same God who: Provided in the wilderness, Promised to Moses at the burning bush, Presided over the exodus, and now Personally calls himself yours.
2. THE PRONOUN: How Personal He Is—"My Shepherd" (v. 1a)
23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
It is a good thing to know that God exists. It is a greater thing to say: He is mine!
2a. The Self-Sufficient Sheep Problem
Charles Spurgeon:
"No one can say, 'The LORD is my shepherd,' until he has given up every idle notion that he can control himself or manage his own interests.”
2a. The Self-Sufficient Sheep Problem
The sheep's problem is not rebellion—it is disorientation. And disoriented creatures need not a rule-book, but a Shepherd.
2b. The Covenant History Behind "My”
This covenant relationship is not invented by David in the wilderness. We take our place in a long procession of people for whom Yahweh has been exactly this.
What I was to them, the same will I be to you. God's faithfulness in the past is the ground of your trust in the present.
2b. The Covenant History Behind "My”
Psalm 100:3 Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
He is the shepherd of the nation and the shepherd of you. He holds the flock, and he holds your name.
Q: What is your only comfort in life and in death?
A: That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.
3. THE CONFESSION: How Satisfying He Is—"I Shall Not Want" (v. 1b)
23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
King David’s original word here in the Hebrew is referring to lack.
Because of who my Shepherd is, therefore I lack for nothing!
3a. The Exodus Background
David is consciously echoing Israel's testimony from the wilderness.
Deuteronomy 28:48
Submission to Yahweh as shepherd equals having everything that matters.
The world tells you: when you get more and you will want less.
Psalm 23 tells you: when you get the Shepherd, and you will want for nothing.
3b. Psalm 34:8-10 provides a most helpful Cross-reference:
The strong and the self-reliant go hungry. But those who seek the Shepherd lack nothing good.
THE SHEPHERD WHO IS OUR MESSIAH: Jesus Christ
John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
At the burning bush, God said I AM WHO I AM.
In the temple courts, Jesus said before Abraham was, I AM.
This is the echo of Divinity. This is Jesus’s own claim that He is our God!
Every other shepherd is mortal. This Shepherd is eternal. Every other shepherd grows tired. This Shepherd never sleeps.
Every other shepherd lays down his life and stays dead. This Shepherd lays down his life and takes it up again—and in doing so, becomes the only shepherd in the universe who can truly guarantee: you shall never lack again!
BIG IDEA:
Yahweh is your Shepherd, and that name—fulfilled in Jesus—means every promise in this Psalm comes from a God who cannot run dry, cannot fail, and will never let you go.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
1. Where are you most tempted to be a self-sufficient sheep?
2. Who or what has been serving as your shepherd?
3. What does it mean for you—today, personally—that Jesus Christ, the one who declared "I AM" before Abraham existed, calls himself your shepherd?
Conclusion 結論:
You were wandering. But He came after you. He found you. He brought you home.
