Staging – MFA

      • Per CA-ERP Frontline’s (Escape) request, we have disabled all email functionality in the Staging environment.
      • Leaving email enabled could result in unintended payroll, pay stub, and other system emails being sent to employees during testing, causing confusion.
      • Turning off MFA in Staging is not a viable option since Staging is a refreshed copy of Production with real, unscrambled data.

MFA validation in Staging via Text Messaging Only

      • Frontline has indicated that MFA is new, testing is limited and currently lacks the ability to support MFA-only emails in non-Production environments without triggering operational emails.

Outcome: MFA will remain enabled in Staging and require users to validate access via text messaging. Email validation is not available.

Database Engine Modernization

The database was spending excessive CPU time determining how to execute queries, increasing operation overhead and risk during peak business processes.

Key improvements implemented:

  • Upgraded database compatibility level from 2012 → 2019
  • Enabled intelligent query processing features
  • Implemented Parameter Sensitive Plan (PSP) optimization
  • Removed 6,006 counterproductive hypothetical indexes
  • Targeted FULLSCAN statistics updates on high-impact tables
  • Optimized maintenance strategy
  • Improved system resource balancing to prevent slowdowns during peak hours

Results:

A streamlined and modernized database engine with reduced internal overhead and improved stability.

Measured Performance Improvements

  • Internal query planning dropped by ~47%
  • Database now compiles queries ~40% faster
  • Approximately 366 hours of CPU time were eliminated
  • The system now operates with significantly reduced internal overhead

This reduces the risk of slowdowns during critical business processes. The database now spends far less time determining how to run queries and more time executing business transactions efficiently.

Practical Examples:

  • A full load of HR employee data (9,533 employees, no filters) improved from 2 minutes 10 seconds to 19 seconds
  • A full load of Finance requisition data (6,273 requisitions, no filters) improved from 1 minute 15 seconds to 18 seconds
