What is the scientific method?

It is a way of solving a problem by gathering relevant information, formulating a hypothesis and testing this hypothesis.

What are the steps?

Make an Observation

Observe what interests you in the real world.

Ask a Question

You need to ask a testable question to figure out what you want to learn.
For example, “Does the type of container affect the growth of grass seeds?”
After asking a question, research your topic. This can be accomplished through observations, the internet, books, or interviews.

Make a Hypothesis

Predict the answer to the question.
After doing your research, you try and guess the answer to the question you asked.
This is usually stated, “If I …. (do something), then …. (this will happen).”

Conduct an Experiment

Now it’s time for the fun part!
Design a test and a set of procedures to test if your hypothesis is correct.
Remember, only have one variable. This way you can check your results and know what changed your outcome.

Draw a Conclusion

Draw conclusions on your data.
Review the data you collected to see if your hypothesis was correct.
Whether your hypothesis was right or wrong, it’s ok. What is important is that you learned something.
