The Scientific Method

Workshop # 1

2 of 20

What is the scientific method?

It is a way of solving a problem by gathering relevant information, formulating a hypothesis and testing this hypothesis.

What are the steps?

4 of 20

Make an Observation

Observe what interests you in the real world.

5 of 20

Ask a Question

  • You need to ask a testable question to figure out what you want to learn.
  • For example, “Does the type of container affect the growth of grass seeds?”
  • After asking a question, research your topic. This can be accomplished through observations, the internet, books, or interviews.

Make a Hypothesis

  • Predict the answer to the question.
  • After doing your research, you try and guess the answer to the question you asked.
  • This is usually stated, “If I …. (do something), then …. (this will happen).”

Conduct an Experiment

  • Now it’s time for the fun part!
  • Design a test and a set of procedures to test if your hypothesis is correct.
  • Remember, only have one variable. This way you can check your results and know what changed your outcome.

8 of 20

Draw a Conclusion

  • Draw conclusions on your data.
  • Review the data you collected to see if your hypothesis was correct.
  • Whether your hypothesis was right or wrong, it’s ok. What is important is that you learned something.

9 of 20

Report Your Results

  • Present your data and share your results with others. This can be in the form of tables, charts, writing, or pictures.
