What is artificial intelligence?

Intelligence (a computer program)
Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions, including the ability to see, understand and translate spoken and written language, analyze data, make recommendations, and so on.
In other words, machines that are programmed to perform certain tasks automatically without the need for humans to supervise their work.

Common Questions and Responses

Common Comments and Responses
(a) I have mixed feelings about AI. There’s a lot to be concerned about.
Over time, AI will change what our assessments look like (see Kirchoff presentation). It won’t happen overnight. “Do the best you can until you know better.” (Maya Angelou)
(b) Cheating. I still want my students to learn and think.
Thinking and using AI do not need to be mutually exclusive. We will need to rethink what we consider cheating. It will also force better assessments.
(c) AI detectors will be needed before using this technology
They are not the cure-all. They are not always reliable. Use your teacher eyes, ears, and brain. This is an important classroom discussion.
Re-reread this list and insert “classmate” or “group of classmates” in every time you see the word “AI”
Common Comments and Responses
(d) But…AI is still going to write essays for my students.
It might. Why do we want the essays written in the first place? Traditional essays will likely be influenced by AI from here on. Other ways of measuring student learning and practicing communication skills exist beyond essays.
(e) You still haven’t given me a way to keep AI from doing my students’ work.
Correct. Practically speaking, it’s impossible. To me the bigger educational topic is student engagement and motivation.
Common Comments and Responses
(f) Don’t you have to be 18 to use Chat GPT or 13 with parental consent?
Yes. However, your students will likely have access to this tool outside of your school. I wouldn’t encourage any tool that requires fake accounts. However, other AI tools with younger age limits will certainly continue to be developed.
(g) We need to tread lightly. I have visions of SkyNet or Wall-E where AI is taking over the world.
It is good to tread lightly. There is a lot to consider that is not all positive. There are ethical considerations that will need to continue to be asked.

Gartner Hype Cycle
Educator & AI Hype Cycle
Conflict and Panic
What is this new AI stuff?
I don’t like it.
This feels like cheating.
28
Experimentation
Wow! These AI tools can do some cool stuff!
That’s a neat trick.
Wait…this is probably just a fad.
I’m not sure I’m ready to use it.
29
Struggle
These tools have a lot of flaws.
They don’t do what I want them to do.
This is tough to implement.
This is too much work.
I’m ready to give up.
30
Progress and Dissemination
I’ve been reading about interesting things that teachers are doing.
There’s some interesting learning things students are doing.
Now that I’ve been shown ideas, I can start to see this.
I could use this in limited ways.
31
Progress at Scale
Some of these AI tools are in my favorite apps or LMS.
I can see how I could save time.
I can see learning improved.
This is going to work.

Types of artificial intelligence and general review

(AI)
Types of artificial intelligence
One of the main classifications is the following:
(a) Reactive machines
This type of AI does not have the ability to form memories or rely on past experiences to make decisions. It is simply guided by the present or future, but has no knowledge of the past
(b) Limited memory
They have information of the past but in a momentary way. Since their storage is not unlimited, like the mind of a human being where it can store memories of the past, they are machines that have information from the past but in a momentary way
Types of artificial intelligence
(c) Mind theory
These machines will be able to understand that human beings are made up of feelings and thoughts that modify their interaction with the world. The behavior of these machines will have to collaborate with social interaction
(d) Self-awareness
The ultimate goal of artificial intelligence is to create machines that are self-aware
Advantages of artificial intelligence
(+) Automation of repetitive tasks
AI can make our day-to-day life much easier, as machines can perform tasks that are difficult for us automatically
(+) Reduces human error
Fewer errors, since there is little human involvement and the tasks are performed automatically, the probability of error is greatly reduced
(+) More room for creativity
It favors the creative process of the human being, since it leaves us with more time to think freely about future tasks or work actions
Advantages of artificial intelligence
(+) Increased accuracy
By reducing the likelihood of error, artificial intelligence provides high accuracy in decision making
(+) Decision making
When making decisions, AI plays a fundamental role due to its agility in the search and connection of information and also the analysis of the data collected
Disadvantages of artificial intelligence
(-) Difficulty of access to data
For an artificial intelligence to work properly, it must have updated and reliable data. This does not always happen in this way, because being just a machine, sometimes it does not have all the necessary data to make decisions appropriate to the needs
(-) Lack of qualified professionals
As this is a new technology, the number of qualified professionals who can handle these tools is very limited
Disadvantages of artificial intelligence
(-) Developing them is expensive
The cost is extremely high. In order to replace or match the human figure with machines, it is essential to have a large amount of money that can cover the necessary development and maintenance costs of these tools
