Distances and Notes

  • 200’ stretches shown in picture (see scale at bottom)
  • Seed Eco Home to Microhouse 4:
    • ~ 950’
  • Microhouse 4 to HabLab:
    • ~ 650’
  • Notes - Depending on your costs and how your are going to splice and terminate your fiber you could save costs with the fiber from Amazon. Ideally getting a homerun would be ideal if it is less than 1000ft. Not sure if you can source a 2000ft roll of fiber.
  • So you would suggest 1000 foot run to Microhouse 4, and then media converter for another run to the Hablab? So we break the distance up into 2 with two 1000 foot runs?
  • Yes. The media converter I found on Amazon should be able to go in and out with two SFP fiber connections. I placed them respectfully on the map but you may need more depending on what you want to do. I haven’t used those before but they work the same and cheap comparatively to other ones.
  • It is not necessary to run fiber to Microhouse 4 as Cat 6 can run 1Gbps

Terminology

  • Outdoor fiber jumper cable or patch cable - fiber cable with plug-in terminals connecting outdoor infrastructure fiber to indoor devices. Can have LC, SC, MTRJ, or MC connectors
  • Small Factor Pluggable - (SFP) - connector from fiber to switch
  • Direct Burial Cat 6 - yes, it can be buried directly for up to 328 feet at 1 gig in low crosstalk environment
  • Crosstalk - electromagnetic interference from other cables
  • Measuring Wheel - You could get a measuring wheel to get a close estimate. Komelon MK4512 Meter-Man 14-Inch Measuring Wheel
  • Ethernet Extender - 1000 Mbps for 800 feet over Cat 6
  • Cat 6 cable
  • 9/125 fiber - dimensions of fiber and cladding
  • SC Connector - connector from burial fiber to utility box (distribution panel)(termination box)
  • Termination Box - whwere buried fiber connects to house
  • FTTH Drop Cable - (Fiber to the House) the fiber that goes to the house
  • Armored fiber - good for rodent-proofing in direct burial - and armored cable slitter -

Considerations & Recommendations:

MPOE - Minimum point of entry

What is a dmarc or MPOE?

Demarcation point is sometimes abbreviated as demarc, DMARC, or similar. The term MPOE (minimum or main point of entry) is synonymous, with the added implication that it occurs as soon as possible upon entering the customer premises. A network interface device often serves as the demarcation point.

Easement -

Cost of Materials - Single mode vs. Multimode

Fiber - Cost per linear foot

Redundancy- Repair of the fiber

Power - Seed EcoHome and Microhouse 3 have solar PV so you will be good for keeping power to your equipment.

Questions

How much does it cost to trench fiber?

The average cost to dig 100 linear feet of trench is $800. Less expensive projects can run as little as $400 while more expensive ones are about $1,200. The payout per linear foot can range between $4 and $12.

The price to install conduit for utilities costs an average of $8 per foot, which includes equipment, labor, trenching and installation of the utility. There are different kinds of conduit, but PVC is generally the cheapest. Half-inch non-metallic PVC pipe adds about $0.25 per foot.

Total Per Linear Foot: $4-$12

Labor*: $2.25-$9.50

Equipment (Trencher): $1.75-$2.50
