Professional Bodies - What are they?
Professional bodies are groups of individuals who share expertise and knowledge of a specialism.
Chartered bodies have their core rights and obligations drawn up in a charter approved by a core body (e.g. code of conduct).
Royal charters have their status granted by the reigning monarch.

Professionals and Their Societies
The Engineers – Civil, Structural, Building Services.
Civil engineering as an activity is as old as architecture and the two occupations were often not distinct from each other.
Civil Engineering incorporates a broad range of different job roles: construction of highways, buildings, dams, tunnels, bridges, and other smaller infrastructure.
The two crucial aspects within this field are consulting engineering (designing the project) and contracting engineering (managing the construction of the project).
In Britain, John Smeaton, said to be the first person to have signed himself `Civil Engineer' on an official document, had become a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1759.
The Institution of Civil Engineers was founded in 1818 (Before RIBA), At this time, it was `merely a study association, having no codes of conduct’.
