PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Introduction

The project creates a VR environment allowing users to compare objects from varying degrees of size with seamless scale transitions.

Advantage to traditional visualization

VR visualization aims to improve understanding of relative sizes using immersive spatial cues compared to traditional 2D methods.

The project evaluates VR's effect on learning by comparing user experience and retention against 2D scale exploration tools.

TIMELINE- 2/10-3/05

  • 2/10- Explore Unity and multiscale layered VR environments, as well as find out some downloadable assets for objects
  • 2/12- Explore a 2D visualization to utilize as a point of comparison for users
  • 2/19- Develop 3D environment and start populating with objects; start survey aimed to be distributed to participants after in-class activity
  • 2/24- Finalize survey, View ways of user interaction by allowing users to download and import files/objects into the simulation
  • 2/26- Finalize the zooming function of the human and add a simple AR environment where at the original viewpoint, the rest of the surrounding can be seen in scale
  • 3/03- Class activity, work on wiki page on multiscale environments
  • 3/05- Finish wiki page

ACTIVITY/DELIVERABLE DETAIL

Activity

User survey after comparing VR visualization to 2D website, aiming at asking users to rank each software in terms of user interactions, ease of understanding, sense of scale, etc.

Deliverable

Wiki page on VR multiscale layered environments, and techniques users can utilize to seamlessly transition between layers

Reflection and analysis of the survey results
