Chapter 16 Exercise 4

Carbon Storage

2 of 7

Challenge

Develop some alternate mechanisms of storing carbon captured from the atmosphere.

3 of 7

Step 1

Once you capture carbon from the atmosphere, the question becomes: where do you store it? One idea for storing carbon is listed below. Come up with at least three more.

  1. Bury it deep underground

Step 2

For each of your four ideas, go around the circle. Each person should give one step in the carbon storage process until the process is complete. An example step is below. Be creative with how to package, transport, seal or even transform the captured carbon in your storage process.

Ex. Process: Bury it deep underground; Step 1. Compress the recovered CO2

Step 3

A big concern when it comes to carbon storage is the potential for leaks, which could put us back where we started. Think about which of your processes would be vulnerable to leaks. What might cause them? How can we avoid leaks?

Step 4

Think about the carbon footprint of each of your storage processes. Are you using more carbon than you’re storing?

Step 5

Create a 2-3 minute presentation sharing your four carbon storage processes. Which one, if any, would you recommend?
