Let’s Start With the
Modern Learning Environments!
In late 2011 we purchased modern learning furniture, redesigned the library as a learning space, and weatherproofed some deck areas (outdoor learning spaces) for two classes to create and provide a unique and practical learning environment that not only encourages learners to lead their own learning but also encourages their growing awareness of knowing how, when, why, what and where they learn most effectively. We also committed to increased e-learning-resourcing and pedagogy.

I started with the WHAT and it worked.
Teachers at Makaraka School are adamant that this modern classroom furniture enhanced the ability of learners to make choices about their learning and where they work best in certain learning situations-
The Makaraka learners are also able to articulate the impact of this modern classroom furniture on their learning, learning habits and self management. Learner quotes included:

I started with the WHAT and it worked.
Two teachers became three; three became five.
All classrooms provided practical learning environments that not only encouraged learners to lead their own learning but also encouraged their growing awareness of knowing how, when, why, what and where they learn most effectively. These classes were enhanced with 21st century practice and pedagogy.
Measureable Increases in hard and soft data areas.
Yes, I got it right!
I had the right recipe!

MLEs e.g. furniture, made a difference because they provided teachers more opportunities to use
pedagogies that make a difference.
And they did!

Modern Learning Environments!
The classroom environments mirrored the schooling environments of my own primary school experiences-20th century education classrooms with wooden desks, blackboards and wooden metre rulers.
How can we expect to inspire 21st century learners and citizens in a 20th century learning environment.
The development in this area had not been the immediate priority in the past.
It had to be now.

We Needed To Start With The
Inside out Approach
MANGAPAPA
To move forward, to consolidate what we’re doing well, to evolutionise what we’re already doing or revolutionise through change and development we need to know, and understand WHY?
This WHY needs to come from OUR collective school community beliefs around teaching and learning in particular teaching and learning at Mangapapa School.
No matter what we do or where we go we should always, come back to !
All organizations start with WHY, but only the great ones keep their WHY clear year after year.” Simon Sinek

Our Beliefs: ‘The Mangapapa Way’
We believe...
Our learners, staff and our community BELIEVE IN and LIVE these beliefs. Because of this these beliefs are the non-negotiables for all at our school.
Moving forward we want to ensure that we get the right people in the right seats on our Great to Greatness Journey Bus.
We believe that if you don’t stand for something you fall for anything!

The Melbourne trip was an opportunity for reflection and reaffirmed our direction/journey. It did plant new seeds of thought however all of this is irrespective if those ‘On The Bus’ do not believe in the WHY!

Why Collaboration?
In the Australian medical profession the standard doctor to patient ratio required when diagnosing a high needs patient is 8 - 1.
With 8 highly experienced, well trained, doctors who specialise in a wide range of areas, the misdiagnosis rate is 20%.
Compare this to one teacher is a room of 30 children, in a profession that is increasingly becoming evidence based, using data to inform (diagnose) practice.
What might we consider to be a fair misdiagnosis rate in this context?
