The Flexible Route

Entry to the Flexible Route

Backgrounds:

  • Trained in Scotland (opted out of the Teacher Induction Scheme)
  • Qualified Outside Scotland (QOS - not eligible to join TIS)
  • Conversion between sectors
  • Gaining registration in a second subject

Probationers following the Flexible Route will often have different:

  • amounts of previous teaching experience
  • lengths of probation service which they have to undertake
  • employment opportunities in their area
  • support networks available to them

  • IPDAP targets - 2 records in each area
  • A minimum of 6 observations
  • A minimum of 190 days if working continuously in one school (otherwise 270 days face to face)
  • A minimum of 9 professional learning entries
  • A minimum of 3 entries in the professional development action plan (PDAP) for each of the 3 areas of the Standard for Full Registration.
  • Encourage completion of supporter meetings.

Record of Teaching Service

Observations

  • A minimum of 55% of your probation service must be in your registration category
  • This can be topped up with 45% of your probation service in any other category including, for example, additional support needs
  • Submit a record of teaching service each term to HT or mentor - This should work out at around 5 blocks. Holiday periods are not included. You are prompted by the system to submit after 45 days of teaching service.
  • Observations should be completed for each 20 day period of teaching service.
  • A minimum of 6 required across the year.
