How to submit your assignment using Turnitin

What is Turnitin?

  • Turnitin is a text matching service - trawls billions of web pages, online journals, articles, publications and other assignments
  • Produces an originality report based on percentage of text matched
  • Makes assignment submission easier
  • Provides a safe archive for assignment submissions
  • Enables electronic marking and electronic feedback
  • Easy access to tutor feedback for students

Before submitting your assignment you will need to copy and paste the assignment cover sheet to the END of your work to avoid it being added to your originality score. The cover sheet will be available for download from the ‘Assessment’ area within your course on Blackboard.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Turnitin will only allow you to submit one document so please ensure your cover sheet and reference list are included in your assignment.

If you are registered with Disability and Dyslexia Support Service (DDSS) or have a Specific Learning Difficulty Please indicate this on the cover sheet

If you are unsure of your programme code and unit code or registration number. You can find this information by clicking MyRecord from the MyServices menu.

�Under ‘Course information’ you will find...

  • Your unit code should start with “SNM” followed by some numbers.
  • Your programme code should start with “NUR” followed by some numbers.

  1. Locate your Blackboard unit and click on the ‘Assessment’ link on the left hand menu. Here you will find an assignment cover sheet and a link to Turnitin.
  2. When you are ready to submit your assignment click on the ‘View/Complete’ link.

Please note: The Turnitin link will be available 2 weeks prior to your submission deadline

You will be taken to the Turnitin assignment inbox area. Click the blue ‘Submit’ button.

Please ensure you check the assignment due date and time, any work submitted after this date/time will incur a late penalty.

Due date: is the date your assignment is due

Post date: is the date your work will be sent to the external examiner

  1. Your first and last name should be filled in automatically. For the ‘Submission Title’ enter your registration number (not your assignment title), which can be found on your Ucard.
  2. Select ‘Choose from this computer’ to locate and attach your assignment from your computer. Alternatively you can now upload directly from Dropbox or Google drive.
  3. Select ‘Upload’ when you have located and selected your assignment.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Turnitin can only accept one document per assignment
  • File size must be less than 100MB
  • The maximum paper length is 800 pages
  • File types accepted include: MS Word (.doc/.docx), WordPerfect (.wpd), PostScript (.eps), Portable Document Format (.pdf), HTML, Rich text (.rtf), Plain text (.txt), and PowerPoint (.ppt, .ppt, .ppsx, .pps), OpenOffice Text (.odt), Google Docs via Google Drive

If the Disability and Dyslexia Support Service (DDSS) have provided you with yellow stickers to attach to your work, please make the marker(s) aware of this by writing Yellow sticker’ before the your registration number in the Submission Title.

You will then be shown a summary of the document you have submitted. If you would like to change anything select ‘Cancel’. If you are happy with this click ‘Confirm’ to complete the submission process.

When the assignment has been successfully submitted you will see a message on screen confirming your submission has been successful.

Please note: The word count will not be accurate because this figure will include your cover sheet and reference list

After submitting your assignment you will receive a digital receipt by email, which will be sent your University email account. You should retain this for your records as proof of submission.

IMPORTANT: You should ensure that you have a copy of your digital receipt. If for some reason you do not receive a digital receipt by email, you can obtain a copy of the receipt from within Turnitin. Read on to find out how...

Checking your submission and re-submitting your work:

After submitting your assignment you can return to the Turnitin assignment inbox to check or resubmit your work. You can resubmit as many times as you wish. Once the submission deadline has passed you cannot change or amend your work.

Click on the ‘View/Complete’ link to open Turnitin

  1. You should see the ‘View’ button that will allow you to view the assignment you have submitted.
  2. To resubmit your work click on the ‘Resubmit’ button. The previous version of your work will be replaced immediately. Please Note: after 3 resubmissions it will take 24 hours from your last submission before a new originality report is generated.

If you have not received a digital receipt by email, you can obtain a copy of the receipt.

To obtain a copy of your digital receipt:

From the Turnitin assignment window click on the download icon and choose ‘Digital Receipt’.

To view your originality report:

Click on the similarity score which will open a panel listing all the matched sources. You can also download a copy of your originality report via the download button. For help understanding your originality report please refer to ‘Viewing and Interpreting your Originality Report’

If you have any problems...

If you are experiencing difficulties submitting your work to Turnitin please consider the following:

  • Are you trying to upload from a trust/hospital computer? Sometimes they have restrictions that limit access to Turnitin, please try another computer. �
  • Are you using Google Chrome? This is the recommended browser which tends to work best, although other browsers to work. You can check system requirements here https://help.turnitin.com/feedback-studio/system-requirements.htm
  • Are you using a mobile device? Turnitin does not offer mobile access, you need to use a PC/Laptop. This also applies to accessing grades and feedback.
