BTHS Senior Mentorship

Overview

  • graduation requirement for all students at the career academies
  • the goal is for all seniors to be placed in a science related role in industry, higher education or a community-based organization
  • the program is designed to be a collaborative experience in which the student and mentor work toward stated goals or assigned projects
  • the purpose of this unpaid internship is to reinforce skills and content taught at Biotechnology High School that are essential to any career-based endeavor
  • you will be assigned a BTHS faculty member, who will visit the site and be available for support

Timing and Logistics

  • starts after Memorial Day Weekend and runs till two days before graduation (dates subject to change with changes to the school calendar necessitated by weather related closings)
  • during this time, internship will replace coming to school and you will report directly to the internship site
  • you are responsible for your own transportation to and from the site

What you need to do

  • part of the experience will require you to reach out to the community and locate your own mentor
    • We would like the mentorship site to be valuable to your own interests in order for you to get the most out of this tremendous experience.
  • all mentorship sites require parental signature, administrative sign off, and board approval and must be finalized by the end of March
  • examples of previous sites are pharmaceutical companies, research labs, science classrooms, hospitals, physician’s offices, veterinary offices, environmental activist associations, public health offices, engineering companies, information technology, marketing and law firms

Important Dates

  • March 1st –copy of mentorship training agreements and permission slips due to Dr. Jensen
    • Training agreements can be found on my website
    • These agreements are extremely time sensitive, as they need to be board approved by the first week in April.
  • May – June * – Internships
    • You will be reporting directly to and from their mentorship site during hours agreed upon by mentor and student
  • June * – Mentorship presentations

WBL Insurance Requirements

  • Additionally, the WBL student must be covered by both the school district’s and the Business/Agency’s liability insurances. Both the school and the Business/Agency agree to the scope, nature, and responsibilities for any other insurance coverage of this school-sponsored, unpaid WBL as deemed necessary by the parties.
  • All parties are asked to provide copies of their respective insurance certificates prior to the start of the WBL. Sample at the end of the contract and linked here
    • On the Certificate of Liability please make sure of the following:

Helpful Tip To Finding a Mentor

  • If you find an internship site you are interested in propose a possible role or project you can assist in.
    • You have lots of skills, figure out how you can be an asset to them and suggest it in your cover letter
    • Match your skills with their needs
      • Examples:
        • Preliminary research proposals
        • Assisting with specific research protocols
        • searching patents
        • Website design
        • Social media marketing
        • Data mining
        • Data analysis
    • Also emphasize that it is unpaid (free labor!)
    • Share your online professional portfolio and/or your resume
