Licensing and negotiations are rarely covered in formal library training, leaving professionals unprepared. The Alliance’s new Open Negotiation Education for Academic Libraries (ONEAL) discussion group addresses this gap, offering an engaging curriculum for all experience levels to explore licensing collaboratively. Discover how ONEAL can benefit you.

Through the work of the E-Content Group over the past several years, the Alliance has developed Licensing Best Practices to help guide conversations about licensing at both the consortial and member levels.

Curriculum

Module 1: Foundations

Introduction to ONEAL Curriculum:

Articulate why learning negotiation skills more formally is important for libraries and personal growth.

Use journaling as a reflective practice within the curriculum and in future negotiations in order to improve feelings of self-efficacy resulting in better negotiation outcomes.

Contracts & Licensing

Read and evaluate a license to determine how well it meets basic criteria and goals.

Understand how licensing decisions impacts library services, research, teaching, and learning.

Approach colleagues in other departments to build relationships and support.

Introductions to Negotiations

Examine how vocational awe and the service orientation of libraries sometimes gets in the way of negotiating.

Explain how being a principled negotiator can support building a sustainable business relationship with library vendors.

Articulate your institution’s values and goals in regards to negotiating for library resources.

Module 2: strategies

Additional issues modules on privacy/surveillance, acquisition models, text and data mining (TDM), and authentication are under development.
