Spelling: Words with VC/CV Pattern
Words that have two consonants in the middle of them form a VC/CV pattern. The vowel sound in the first syllable is often short. Each syllable in a VC/CV word ends in a consonant. That means that each syllable is closed. Divide VC/CV words between the two consonants such as pen/cil, and bar/ber. Doing this will help you read a VC/CV pattern word.

Spelling: Inflected Endings
Most plural nouns end in -s. Words that end in sh, ch, tch, s, ss, or x need to have -es added to them to make them plural. These letters add another syllable to the word. When the word ends in -y, change the y to an i and add -es.

Syllable patterns VC/V and V/CV can be used to help you remember how to spell words. Divide a VC/V word after the consonant (fin/ish). This is the rule when the first vowel has a short vowel sound. Divide a V/CV word before the consonant (hu/man). This rule applies when the first vowel has a long vowel sound.
