DESIGN PROCESS UPDATE

DESIGN COMMITTEE & STAFF INPUT:

SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER 2021/2022

BIG IDEAS

  • No long hallways, we want a connected school.
  • Access to the outdoors is key – for learning and play.
  • The Library should feel connected but also a quiet refuge for kids.
  • The iLAB needs to be in the center and up front, showing our commitment to STEM.
  • A multipurpose commons where we can dine, gather as a community, and celebrate the performing arts

“At the current River Grove, there is limited quiet space to build relationships with students.”

“The Pods are isolating, they hinder collaboration.”

“Biophilic design should be embraced to help students connect to nature and impact their emotional wellbeing.”

Path to Net Zero

  • Electrification - All systems included in the design are electric, no fuel fired systems.

  • Existing Building Comparison - 70% energy use reduction compared to an average, existing elementary school in Portland’s climate.

  • Beyond Energy Code - 30% energy reduction compared to a code minimum, new-construction elementary school.

  • Solar PV Array - 32% of energy consumption covered by PV Array annually.

  • Microgrid – 250kW battery will reduce peak electricity demand by an annual average of 18%; system will charge when the grid is cleaner and discharge when grid carbon emissions are high reducing overall building carbon emissions.

PV Solar Array

150 kW array offsets the building load during the day, reducing energy consumption from the grid.

Air-Source Heat Pumps

Outdoor air for ventilation is conditioned by extracting/rejecting heat to the ambient air.

Battery/Microgrid

Onsite battery storage; building micro-grid to interact with local electrical grid, reducing peak electrical demand and building carbon emissions.

Heat Pump Water Heaters

Domestic hot water is heated by extracting heat from ambient air.
