Boring stuff

Psycho-Pass is a Japanese anime television series produced by Production I.G, directed by Naoyoshi Shiotani and Katsuyuki Motohiro, and written by Gen Urobuchi.

Urobuchi also wrote Fate/Zero and Madoka Magica! He kinda writes dark, socially well constructed works. Yeah. i got this off wikipedia.

2012 anime (season one). Very cool. The opening is by Ling tosite Sigure. TK slayed the vocals. I fairly dislike the second opening. Won’t be talking about it.

[Left to right] Kogami Shinya, Tsunemori Akane, Nobuchika Ginoza, Shuusei Kagari, Yayoi Kunizuka, Karanamori Shion and Tomomi Masaoka.

Setting

Psycho Pass takes place in a futuristic Japan (season one, specifically, in the year 2112-2113). Ding ding! It’s a science fiction. But despite being a Sci-Fi, it deals with things way more human than...human centred genres.

In this very futuristic Japan, everyone lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the [redacted] attacked. Jk.

The cause of people’s felicity is the strict, mechanised crime determining algorithm. A ‘Psycho Pass’ is the measurement of a person’s psychological tendencies. Each and every citizen is scanned, all the time (some Big Brother shit), for their stress levels to eventually determine their latency to commit crime.

Having the world so carefully monitored for any form of criminal activity makes the people of 2112 Japan happy and carefree. As a recurring character, [redacted2], believes--no one fears their neighbours. There is no need to lock your doors at night. Pretty cool, huh?

Characters

The lead characters of the series are a police force in the Public Safety Bureau, under a mysterious (so mysterious~) governing body called the Sybil System. So yeah cliche stuff but our little girl Tsunemori Akane is a new recruit in the CID under Division 1, currently lead by this bossy man named Ginoza. Really shouldn’t be saying this, but homegirl was just booksmart and not even passionate about this justice bullshit. Explains a lot.

Our other deuteragonist is Kogami Shinya, a selfish, revenge driven man who ended up on the bad side of the society. I don’t really appreciate his existence, but he was important nonetheless.

What does that mean - Part One

The Sybil System is the supreme governing body in the 22nd century Japan. It has the authority to determine, judge and punish a criminal, or a latent criminal. Kogami Shinya has been deemed a latent criminal--which isn’t a bad thing!

Latent criminals are not jailed and excluded from the society all the time. People like Kogami are given a chance to join the justice system (how ironical) and do the...dirty work for the inspectors. :D

I DO NOT WANT TO HINDER YOUR INTERPRETATIONS OF THE SERIES’ THEMES

So i will just hippity hoppity to the major themes, i guess. Here have a picture of kogami or whatever

Why Should You Watch Psycho Pass 2012

  • Detailed political world: Psycho Pass is set in the world where advanced technology and humans coexist, and interact. Being governed by an algorithm that determines everything for you is uncanny to imagine. Psycho Pass breaks down neutral political concepts for you to decide for yourself if you would want to live in a world where your life is ruled over by a powerful, extremely complex mechanism which works for your comfort.
  • Individual concepts of morality: i know the show sounds rather straightforward and predictable, but oh how wrong you are. Each and every character stands for their own sense of good, evil, justice, crime and the quality of being human.

  • The mystery regarding Sybil: sybil is cool. But what is sybil. (illuminati noises)
  • The sexiest ‘antagonist’ in history: not just anime or manga history--all time shit. I’m leaving this rather ominous because when i start talking about them, i will not shut up. Very interesting smaller villains too.
  • This one is so cool. Literature: have you ever seen a sci-fi so heavily driven with literary concepts? All the characters portray literary excellency. Psycho Pass references works that directly impact its world-building foundation (1984 by George Orwell, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? And The Minority Report By Philip K. Dick, A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley), and has the characters quoting literature that points to their morality and philosophies (Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare, Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche, Discipline and Punish by Michel Foucault, Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu). Just google ‘books mentioned in psycho pass’ and the list is HUGE

  • Heavy themes: crime is not the only thing Psycho Pass deals with. The show questions (and wants you to question) identity, facades, death, god, government, good, evil, camouflage, society, literature, art, expression, freedom, immortality, perfection, justice, philosophy and human dependence.
  • It was banned in China for politically questionable content lol

Cute character for tension breaker :D

  • Domestic LGBTQ+ representation, quoting user on twt: one of the reasons why I really like psycho-pass and their representation of lgbt+ stuff is that they don't make a big deal out of it. it's just normally woven into the story and their lives - it just feels natural and not paraded around.
  • Critically appreciated: i have never seen a single negative review of the show. I know this isn’t a cool thing, because people suck, but it truly is a great show.
  • Small fanbase: more like dead fanbase. Sorry. No toxicity in your life. You will find people posting their shitty reviews on the internet. That’s all.
  • COOL TECH: if you’re a technology nerd and want to see cool new inventions. Yeah. coexisting holograms, upgrading guns, heavy cybernetics, hue/mood scanners, commufield, memory scoop and more. Other lesser tech stuff like plastination, hyper oats, illegal music, philosophers on the internet and tatted jailbirds.

I can really go on about this but i have to stop. My opinions on the show can have an impact in your judgement, and i do not want that to happen. Because i need something from you. Which shouldn’t be something i told you.

But do watch it. And tell me if you do, or else i would have to pull a clockwork orange on you. Only 22 episodes.
