Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881.

During his career, he spent most of his adult life in France, creating over 50,000 works of art!

His early work was very realistic. He created a series of paintings people call his “Blue Period” because most of the paintings were monochromatic- in one color range- of blue.

He, along with another artist, Georges Braque, invented a style of art called “Cubism”. Subjects in Cubism are broken up into pieces and re-arranged in an abstract or disjointed way. They were trying to view each part from a separate angle, at the same time!

Most of his work was about how things looked, but occasionally he made art with a political theme. During World War II, Picasso saw a news article about a Nazi bombing of a Spanish town called Guernica. He created this painting in response.
