Getting to Heaven

Underlying Assumptions

1. As regular participants in our Thursday morning Men’s Christian Fellowship, we are interested in studying the life, promises, and teachings found in the Bible, especially those about Jesus Christ, while hoping and trusting that we are on our way to Heaven.
2. We believe that the Bible is a generally accurate and sufficient guide to the character, identity, truth, and ways of the God of the universe. But does its witness represent the full Truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth or is it corrupted or missing vital things?
3. While we’re still alive, we consider ourselves to be unfinished “works in progress” who still have the capacity to grow in faith through fellowship with Christ, His Word, and others seeking Him.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. _{Hebrews 10:24-25}

Christian Corollaries

4. Salvation and Eschatology have the same dimensions in time – those leading up to and following after death.
5. Not everyone who claims to be a “Christian” will ultimately be confirmed by Christ as a faithful disciple of His. Even some who seem to be solidly planted in the “big tent” of Christianity will be found by Him to have been “weeds.”
6. Belief systems like Hinduism, Islam, Unitarian Universalism, Baha’i and others may share some agreements with orthodox Christianity but also have fundamental differences which render them appropriate candidates for hearing about the Great Commission.
7. Similarly, some interpretations of Christian faith may contain alterations in doctrine and emphasis which are actually invalid.
8. It would be grievous if a participant in our group were to die only to hear Christ say, “Depart from Me, I never knew you.”

Light and Life

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. Genesis1:1-4

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, He gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God… John 1:9-13

Salvation in Christ

Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear. _{Isaiah 59:1-2}

Being born again

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot [see or] enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

“Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” John 3:3, 5-7, 11-15

Being born again

A Heart Change of Trust

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. _{Proverbs 3:5-7}

Collaborative ways of being oriented to life:

1. Human knowledge, opinion, politics, reason, human needs, and understanding – Augustine’s City of Man encompasses all of all man’s imagined empires, large and small.
2. Divine spiritual knowledge, faith, revelation, integration, and wisdom – Augustine’s City of God encompasses everyone who is a genuine child of God.

What is Saving Faith?

Our answer to this question depends on four things:

1. Meaning – What do the words “Saving” and “Faith” mean?
2. Source – Where does this information come from?
3. Content – What exactly has been shared?
4. Effect – How have we received it?

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

1 Corinthians 2:12

… while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:1, 11-12

The Second Coming

Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. Revelation 1:7

For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 1 Thess. 4:16-17

...so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. Hebrews 9:28

The Gospel of the Kingdom

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him… And this Gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Hebrews 9:27-28; Matthew 24:14

God’s Kingdom reign is active before, now, and after Christ’s return.

The Gospel of the Kingdom is the good news of reconciliation between God and Man, Heaven and Earth. It’s the amazing story God’s faithfulness, resolving the rebellion against his kingship. Grace and faith are indeed the keywords defining the two sides of that story: Heaven takes the initiative with Grace to make peace. Earth responds with Faith and allegiance to the king.

Salvation is God rescuing us from the kingdom of darkness, self, sin,

and death and welcoming us into the eternal Kingdom of his Son.

Salvation – Two dimensions of reconciliation and maintaining union with the true God and Creator of our Universe along with some of their benefits:

NOW Rescue from sin and many of its harmful consequences through conviction, repentance, and adoption into God’s family; then rewarded through discipleship with abundant life here.

LATER Saved from eternal separation from God and infinitely rewarded with a new heavens and new earth in the Lord’s Millennial Kingdom and then on into an eternity with Him forever after.

Biblical words for “Faith”

What is Christian Faith?

1. Faith = Trust
2. Faith is leaning on, trusting in, and yielding to the guidance of who or what is being trusted.
3. To trust, we must first believe in the credibility of the source and then demonstrate that by acting accordingly.
4. Trust has degrees, from partial to full.
5. Christian faith is placing one’s full trust in the identity, person, abilities, powers, promises and guidance of the Trinitarian God of the Bible, including the Son Jesus (Yeshua) as the Christ (Messiah).

Getting Heaven to Earth

• “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”
• Lowering Heaven instead of raising Hell
• Appropriate guidance about the proper Way and Truth needs to be discerned for the Good News of God’s Life to be demonstrated instead of misguided virtue signaling and toxic charity.

Getting Us to Heaven or “getting saved”

• "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
• The promise of eternal security and Life after death
• The consequence of receiving Christ’s free gift of forgiveness and following Him in a loving and faithful personal relationship
• Requires wholehearted acceptance and faithful follow through.

What is Eisegesis?

Eisegesis is the interpretation of a text, particularly scripture, by reading one’s own or others’ ideas, biases, or presuppositions into it, rather than drawing the original meaning out of it. As the opposite of exegesis, it often involves taking passages out of context to support a preconceived agenda, turning the text into a mirror of the reader.

Key Aspects of Eisegesis

• Definition & Origin: Derived from the Greek eisegeomai (“to lead into”), it means injecting personal interpretation into a text.
• Examples in Usage: A common example is saying “this passage means to me... ”. It occurs when someone forces a text to support a personal hobby horse, such as, “This verse proves that I should buy this car," rather than examining what the author originally intended.

Afterlife in Different Worldviews

Atheism – Return to non-existence; amorphous hopes/expectations

Marxism – Materialist; rejects idea of afterlife as tool of oppression

The Big Humanism Tent

How to get to Heaven

• Exegesis vs. Eisegesis: What were the original authors inspired to write vs. autosuggestion, wishful thinking, and confirmation bias.
• God’s love: God offers salvation to all, but it must be received and acted upon to be secured. He created human beings in His Image with free will and offers us access to the spiritual capacity to know and comprehend Him, His Word, and the Gospel message.
• Repentance: Respond to conviction by turning to God and faithfully seeking His guidance to keep going straight on His path.
• Vision: Biblical Eschatology vs. Enlightenment Progressivism. Will our age be consummated in divine judgment and God establishing His Kingdom on earth or in an ever-evolving human utopia? Read brief summary in Hebrews 6:1-3.

Heaven before Earth

Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Philippians 3:20-21
