Reading - Summer Reading Challenges

  • Around the World Reading Challenge
  • Disney Animated Reading Challenge: This is a creative idea for Disney lovers! There are prompts based on 55 Disney movies. Set a goal for the summer. For extra fun - watch the movie before or after you complete a prompt. Here is a link with more information.
  • Create a personalized reading challenge with a list of books based on interests or genres. Here is a list of 104 prompt ideas to get you thinking.
  • Read in 100 Places Challenge: Read in different locations (under a tree, next to an animal, on the couch, by the pool, in an elevator) throughout the summer. Keep a list. Be creative!
  • If you don't like any of these challenges, look on the internet or at your public library for other ideas.

Reading - More Activities

  • Book-based activities: Choose books that spark imagination and build vocabulary, then use them as inspiration for related activities. This could involve:
    • Creating a map of a book's setting.
    • Acting out scenes or writing alternative endings.
    • Reviewing books and sharing opinions.
  • Audiobooks: Listen to audiobooks
  • Utilize your local library: Explore the library's resources, including summer reading programs, book lists, and digital borrowing options.

Research Activities

  • Research local attractions and plan a trip to one of them.
  • Read an article from a newspaper, magazine or online source and create a one-pager.
  • Research a destination you would like to visit and create a Top 10 list (digital or hand created) for the destination. Add a one or two sentence summary for each item on the Top 10 List. Bonus ideas: Research a destination on each continent. Research UNESCO World Heritage sites; Research the 50 US state capitals.
  • Read about a topic you already know a lot about. Then, create a presentation to share new information you discovered.
  • Complete the Junior Ranger Park Explorer activity for a National Park you are interested in learning more about.
  • Pick a state or a country and research foods the state or country is known for. Then plan a meal and design a menu. Bonus: Create a grocery list, go shopping, and prepare the meal.
