Let’s Understand

The most common example of a diatonic scale is the C Major scale. Notice that

all notes are played on the keys of the piano. No accidental signs are needed

because it follows the major scale pattern of WS-WS-HS-WS-WS-WS-HS. In

this scale, C is the home tone. It is on the ledger line below staff.

To be able to construct a major scale, one must be familiar with the concept of whole and half step intervals. A half step(HS) is the shortest distance between two notes, while a whole step(WS) is composed of two half steps. Study the illustration below.

Some major scales necessarily use accidentals to maintain the required interval pattern of intervals for that type of scale. One example is the G Major scale. Study the illustration below.

In this scale, G(so) is the home tone. The beginning note is found on the second line of the staff. Observe that a sharp sign is placed before F in order to maintain the required interval

pattern of WS-WS-HS-WS-WS-WS-HS.

Another scale is the F Major scale. It uses the flat sign to create the interval pattern of a major scale. The pitch B is lowered by a half step to make the major scale pattern. What is the home tone of the F Major scale?

Let’s Evaluate

Activity 1

A. Write the letter names in the square to form a word. Indicate where the following notes will be played on the keyboard by marking the keys on the keyboard diagrams with an X then draw connecting lines. An example is done for you.

Activity 2

  1. Using do, construct the scale of G major on the staff and be sure to place the

sharp (#) on its correct position

B. Complete the C Major Scale on the staff. Label each note by writing the

syllable name and its corresponding pitch name. Write your answer on the

line.
