LC Science 2025

Senior options – Physics

2 of 10

LC competencies

LC 2027 onward will have a new course curriculum for LC Biology, Chemistry, and Physics

Based on Competencies and key skills developed at JC, LC Physics improves on these further over your course of study

Assessment Structure

All Science subjects are offered at OL and HL

  • Grading stays same as prior to curriculum changes (H1 = 100points etc)
  • Assessment will be split into two parts;

-AAC – Additional Assessment Component – 40% - Common brief (marked according to level selected)

-Written examination – 60%

  • Both are corrected by SEC – subject teacher will not grade either component

AAC info

  • Scientific research on an issue related to the brief – released in term 2 of 5th year
  • Experimental research related to an issue within the brief
  • Approx 20 hours to research, design and conduct experiment, and conclude to produce findings
  • Based on one of the three cross cutting themes in LC sciences:
    • Health
    • Sustainability
    • Technology

What type of student studies Senior Science?

  • Students who enjoyed JC science and want to explore in more detail the topics they particularly had an interest in should definitely consider LC sciences.

  • It is particularly suited to students who enjoy investigation and problem solving.

  • Each student must have an aptitude and interest for laboratory work.

  • LC sciences are course requirements for a huge number of courses of study after LC

Physics and Careers

  • Physics contributes to your future career in many ways. It helps, in conjunction with the other Leaving Certificate subjects, to provide a broad, balanced education for any student.
  • Physics teaches students to think logically and enables them to express their thoughts in a concise manner. The skills and knowledge developed through their study of physics can be useful in a wide variety of situations.
  • Many careers benefit from the logical and numeracy skills developed by the study of physics. Many technical courses involve components of physics.

Physics and Careers

Physics students learn how to consider any problem; they are not bound by context. This inventive thinking makes physicists desirable in any field. Physics is a great foundation for careers in:

  • Journalism
  • Law
  • Finance
  • Medicine
  • Engineering
  • Aviation
  • Shipping
  • Computer Science
  • Astronomy
  • Optician

What type of student might Physics suit?

  • Students considering a career in any mathematical or scientific discipline, such as finance, statistics, engineering, physics, or computer science.
  • Those who enjoy learning about how things work.
  • There are strands of physics which overlap with woodwork and construction especially the electricity and heat sections.
  • HL maths is not a requirement to do HL physics. Students should not avoid physics because of not studying HL maths. It is entirely possible to get on well in physics without HL maths.
