Introduction

  • In the history of the United States of America, over 2.2 million Scouts have earned the Eagle Rank since 1912.
  • Earning the rank of Eagle Scout is a special event. Less than 5% of Scouts earn this distinction.
  • In this presentation, we will review:
    • The Eagle Rank Requirements
    • The Steps from Life to Eagle

Eagle Rank Requirements

Per the Scout Handbook:

  1. Be active for 6 months after Life rank
  2. Live by the Scout Oath and Law
  3. Earn at least 21 Merit Badges (including the 13 required for the Eagle Scout rank)
  4. Hold a position of responsibility for a period of 6 months after earning Life rank
  5. Complete an Eagle Scout Service Project
  6. Scoutmaster Conference
  7. Eagle Scout Board of Review

Rank Requirements – Notes

  1. Be active for 6 months after Life rank:
    • Any 6 month period
    • Need not be consecutive
  2. Live by Scout Oath & Law:
    • How you act in life, not just at Troop activities
  3. 21 Merit Badges:
    • 13 Required MB: Camping, Citizen in Community, Nation & World, Communications, Cooking, E-Science, Family Life, First Aid, Personal Fitness, Personal Management AND
      • Either E-Prep or Lifesaving AND
      • Either Swimming or Hiking or Cycling
    • Three Required MB Have 90-Day Requirements: Family Life (chores), Personal Fitness (exercise), and Personal Management (cash in/out). Plan accordingly.

Rank Requirements – Notes

  1. Hold a position of responsibility for a period of 6 months after earning Life rank:
    • Examples: SPL, ASPL, Patrol Leader and others as listed
    • Scout does not have to hold one position for six (6) months
    • Scout does not have to hold the position for six (6) consecutive months
    • Scout may meet this requirement any time while a Life Scout prior to his 18th birthday.
    • The goal is to have a Scout demonstrate the leadership the leadership skills he has acquired
    • The standard of performance used to measure this requirement shall be the same as that applied to any other Star, Life or Eagle Scout candidates.

Rank Requirements – More Notes

5. Complete an approved Eagle Scout Service Project:

    • May start planning your project after achieving Life rank
    • All work must be undertaken while you are a Life Scout and completed before your 18th birthday.
    • Provides opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills learned in Scouting.
    • The Scout must plan the work, organize the personnel needed, and direct the project to completion.
    • Beneficiary outside of Scouting
    • Routine maintenance should not be considered
    • There is NO minimum or maximum number of volunteers or hours of work needed
    • Written approvals must be obtained before you begin. Fundraising requires separate approval

      • What are our your current interests outside Scouting?
      • What are your best skills?
      • What school, churches or community organizations have influenced you?
    • The Eagle Project Workbook:
      • Proposal (requires Parent Committee presentation/approval)
      • Plan
      • Report

The Steps from Life to Eagle

  1. Complete Eagle Scout rank requirements #1-6 before your 18th birthday
  2. Complete the Eagle Scout Application Form
      • Use the current version of form
        • All dates must be verified & correct (check with Neal)
      • Letters of Reference
        • General process
        • Religious
      • Essay (statement of goals & ambitions)
  3. Submit the Eagle Package to Council Office:
      • Application Form
      • Essay
      • Eagle Project Workbook

The Steps from Life to Eagle

4. The Council will:

      • Verify dates per Application (or seek any corrections)
      • Gather letters of reference
      • Advise T73 once BOR can be scheduled

5. Eagle Board of Review:

      • Panel interview lasting approx. 90 minutes
      • Approximately 6 adults
      • Requires unanimous vote
  • Application Form:
      • Following BOR, signed by T73, Council Rep & Scout Exec.
      • Sent to BSA National for approval

Your 18th Birthday!!

Most people receive about 18 years advanced warning of their 18th birthday. It is NOT an emergency or an unexpected event.

If you’re nearing 18….

    • Work hard to complete your requirements
    • Talk to your leaders now so that they can help you and help resolve problems
    • Know your deadlines in advance
    • Remember that adult leaders have busy lives
