Shindell Results Overview

Cleaner air resulting from meeting America’s Paris targets would avoid over the next 50 years in the USA:

  • 4.5 million premature deaths
  • 1.4 million hospitalizations and emergency room visits
  • 300 million lost workdays
  • 1.7 million incidences of dementia
  • 440 million tons of crop losses

How? Co-Benefits!

Burning fossil fuels also releases pollutants that create higher levels of particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone

  • Ozone can aggravate lung diseases like asthma and emphysema
  • PM2.5 can cause premature death in people with heart problems or lung disease and can also aggravate asthma
  • These cause 250,000 premature deaths in the U.S. annually and cause lost workdays
  • Ozone pollution also hampers crop productivity
  • PM2.5 seems to increase the incidence of dementia

Value of a Statistical Life

  • Some of these benefits (e.g., avoided lost workdays, improved crop yields, lower healthcare costs) have economic benefits that can be quantified. But what about avoided premature deaths?
  • “Value of a statistical life” can be estimated by asking people how much they would be willing to pay to reduce their risk of death in a given year.
  • The resulting numbers are big! But they represent a subjective value, not a direct boost to the economy. It’s important to be careful with these numbers.

Immediate Local Clean Air Benefits

  • Meeting America’s Paris pledge would yield for California over the next 20 years:
    • 150,000 avoided premature deaths from air pollution valued at $1.5 trillion
    • 7.6 million fewer lost workdays due to air pollution worth $1.4 billion
    • 44,000 fewer cases of dementia
    • Increase wheat production by 70 million bushels worth $400 million
    • Increase corn production by 150 million bushels worth $670 million
