The Opening of School

Hybrid Cohorts & Schedules

To ensure social distancing while still promoting opportunity for students to engage in a social setting students have been placed in cohorts alphabetically as follows:

Placing students into cohorts (full remote and hybrid students mixed) allows for continuity and greater flexibility and options in the delivery of instruction; so while students will be expected to log in to class daily, classroom instruction, assignments, and projects can be differentiated and cohorts.

This may include synchronous and asynchronous learning.

To bring the information together in a coherent organized manner, the next slide is the calendar for September and early October.

Protocols and Procedures

Daily Health Screening

  • Protocols will be in place for daily health screenings of students, teachers, secretarial staff, administrators, and all other staff members.
  • This screening will be used to complete the necessary mandates as per the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protocols for in-person school.
  • Please refer to the Student Daily COVID-19 Symptom Check Letter.
  • This check-in system must be completed by all students/parents/guardians prior to departing for in-person school.
  • A second, in-person screening will occur on school grounds prior to entry into the school building.
    • This second screening will be a temperature check at the Main Entrance to KHS.

15 of 26

Hallway Movement, Lockers, and Restrooms

Hallways

  • In order to allow for safe spacing in hallways between classes and during entry and exit into the building, we have developed a two-way traffic system of the building’s hallways and a one-way system for all staircases.
  • Additionally, lockers and locker rooms will not be used in order to prevent clustering of individuals in secluded spaces.
    • As changing clothes for physical education class will not be possible, students should wear appropriate attire to school to participate in physical education class.

  • At no point during the school day should students use the hallways for any other reason than movement to and from their classes unless they have a pass to do so.
  • When entering the building at the beginning of the day, students will report directly to their Period 1 classroom.
  • At the end of the school day, using a staggered approach for dismissal students will leave the building through the Main Entrance with bussing students leaving first.

16 of 26

Hallway Movement, Lockers, and Restrooms

Restrooms

  • Restrooms will be closed during the passing time between classes.
  • Students will be excused from class individually to use the restroom.
  • Teachers will only allow one student to leave class at time to use the restroom.
  • Restrooms will be monitored for capacity as only one student will be permitted into each restroom at a time.
  • In the event of an emergency, please use the restroom in the nurse’s office.

Social Distancing and Mask Protocols

  • As students arrive on school property and enter the building, they must maintain appropriate social distancing and wear a mask.
  • All students and staff will be required to wear masks throughout the instructional day both inside the classroom and during transit in the building.
  • It is expected that parents will provide masks for their children.
  • Students should wear clean masks each day.

17 of 26

Hallway Movement, Lockers, and Restrooms

Drinks

  • Students must bring their own water and/or refillable water bottles as water fountains will not be utilized.
  • Drinks will be incorporated into “Mask Breaks” throughout class time.
  • Just a reminder that vending machines will not be available at this time.

18 of 26

Building Security and Communication

School Visitors

  • All doors are locked for security reasons.
  • Visitors will not be permitted into the school building.
  • Students who arrive late to school will need to comply with screening procedures prior to entry.
  • With the exception of medication, we will not be able to accept deliveries or drop-off materials for students.
    • Please contact the nurse’s office for medical-related deliveries.

Communication

  • We kindly request that all parents call, email, or make appointments with teachers regarding academic issues.
  • Parents may contact staff by phone or via email using the first initial and last name of the staff member.
  • Teachers will typically respond to email communications within 24 hours.
  • If you email a teacher on a Friday or weekend, the teacher will respond to your email by the end of the next school day.
  • Each teacher has a phone extension which is listed in the staff directory on our website.
  • Parents must dial the main number 732-212-6100, and then will be prompted to dial the appropriate extension.

Student Attendance

As mentioned above, students have been placed in alphabetical cohorts for their in-person rotation through classes. We cannot accommodate changes to cohorts and students are not able to attend school in-person on a different day if they are not available on their cohorts’ day for any reason.

  • Attendance will be taken each period, both virtually and in-person.
  • When students are in-person, teachers will take attendance traditionally, as students enter the room.
  • When working virtually, it is expected that students adhere to the class period schedule.

Parents who are opting to keep their students home for a full-virtual experience, are expected to follow the schedule of their assigned cohort.

***These students may be asked to remain in the video lesson for the entire duration of the class period on the days that their cohort is in-person.

20 of 26

Student Attendance

Attendance Procedure

  • As always, if a student is unable to attend school on a given day due to illness or appointment, the parent is required to report the student’s absence to the Attendance Office at 732 212 6100 ext. 3099 or email: hsattendance@kpsdschools.org.
  • If a child is going to be absent or late, parents are required to leave a message on this extension before 8:00 am.
  • At the same time, if a student is scheduled to attend in-person on their scheduled day and is unable to attend school due to a mild illness or a need to quarantine, but is able to participate virtually, that student may participate in their classes through video conference.
  • In this scenario, that student will be considered present as long as a parent contacts the attendance office in advance.

21 of 26

Student Attendance

Late Arrival and Early Dismissal Procedures

  • Given the complex logistics of screening and the policy of no visitors, the safe management of entering students at all different times will be challenging.
  • As a result, we request that parents please make every effort to ensure that their children arrive at school on time.

  • Students may not be picked up early unless it is an emergency.
  • Please schedule doctor’s appointments, dental and orthodontic appointments, or other related types of services after instructional time whenever possible.
  • If appointments must be scheduled during the school day, please do so at a time when students are home for virtual instruction.
  • If, in a rare case, a student needs to be picked up during the day, the parent will be asked to wait outside the school and the student will be brought outside.

22 of 26

Student Attendance

Virtual Learning

  • On days when student cohorts are not meeting in-person at KHS, students are expected to participate in their scheduled classes.

  • This includes, but is not limited to,
    • signing onto video conferences
    • working on individual and group class projects
    • submitting assignments
    • engaging in independent learning and study time.

As mentioned above, students will be held accountable for their attendance on a period by period basis, both in school and virtually.
