Malaysia is getting a lot worse on food waste issues. According to Malaysia news,"4,046 tonnes of edible food are thrown away daily. This amount can feed three million people with three meals a day, also can fill the one-and-the-half Olympic-sized swimming pools. The high cost incurred to dispose of food wasted by each Malaysian household comes to about RM210 a month, or RM2,600 a year. At the same time, 828 million people are affected by hunger and acute food insecurity arises". The food waste disposal process also produces greenhouse gas that causes global warming.

Thus in accordance with SDG 12, Clean Our Plate project wishes to be a bridge towards issues and Malaysian youth to create and increase awareness, change attitudes and mindset of the society as well as initiate easy and obvious actions of youth towards reducing preventable food waste and fully utilizing surplus food, in order for them to influence their peers and households. Besides that, we also wish to create a zero-hunger community in Malaysia.

Volunteers

learning points

  • Be a youth involved in environmental responsibility

Food waste is one of the factors contributing to global climate change, particularly in Malaysia, but sadly, very few people are aware of this. Our constant production of food waste has already covered some of the earth's surface. The majority of Malaysians, especially the younger generation, are unaware of this issue and are unaware of the obvious steps they could take to contribute to its resolution. Be the change you wish to see in this world.

  • Personal development

To improve interpersonal skills such as leadership skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills and many more.

  • Expand your network

Build relationships with like-minded volunteers, organizing committee members as well as with professionals or even with international youths.

  • Bring positive impact to the local community

You will get to gain practical experiences by being a part in spreading awareness on climate change to people, thus creating a positive and long-lasting impact to the community.

Our Past

Volunteer Testimonials

Kee Yan Qi

I have learned a lot of useful things in this volunteering experience. For example, I have learned how to repurpose food waste into other things like using Black Soldier Flies to do compost, repurpose used cooking oil into soap, using coffee ground in order to plant mushroom and so on. This is my first time communicating with refugees and preparing meals for refugees. I feel this is an interesting and memorable experience for me. I have known more about them and also the problem they faced currently which is food insecurity. I am also very happy that I can do my part to help them, like helping them to collect money to prepare nutritional meals for them through physical and online crowdfunding.

Low Yun Hui

After finishing volunteering, I have achieved some of the goals that I set before. First, I get to know more friends by chit-chatting with each other. Secondly, I improve my communication skills since I have to talk to strangers during physical fundraising activities. Thirdly, my confidence level also improved as I had more chances to speak in English, for example during school exhibitions and school workshops. During this volunteering experience, I have learned about the ways to repurpose food waste. For example, I have learned the ways to make soap by used cooking oil. Also, I also know about how to differentiate edible and non-edible food.

Our Past

Volunteer Testimonials

Adrienne bin Ajis

I learnt how to do compost using Black Soldier Fly(BSF), There are 3 steps in BSF Composting namely grinding, feeding and harvesting. Grinding is where we use any machine to grind the organic food waste, then the grinded food waste will be spread onto a container evenly. After that, the feeding is to spread the BSF Larvae onto the container evenly. Lastly, harvesting is where we separate the frass and the larvae. The most memorable thing for me would be where I get to physically help The Lost Food Project (TLFP). I get to carry and distribute sorted vegetables to a lot of charity. It was tiring and physically demanding but for me that is what it means to volunteer. I also get to talk to a few TLFP members and get to know how they got the food and how many charity organisation they distribute to.

Goh Jia En

I'm so happy and never regret that I have joined this project. In this month, I have stepped out of my comfort zone to try new things, meet a lot of new friends and gain new experiences that I have never tried before. Through this volunteering project, I also learned about the food waste issue that is currently faced by our country and given the opportunity to spread awareness to the public. We conducted the school workshop, had a booth in the Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur, cooked the imperfect food, planted the vegetables, volunteered in [The Lost Food ] and [The Assembly Soup Kitchen] and also have a chance to meet those refugees. Those activities were really fun and interesting and I really enjoyed them.
