Let’s talk colour. Why do we do a grade?

  1. Colour is graded for consistency.

Exposures (curves!) Colour temperature (use temperature OR colour wheels to isolate highlights / mids / darks)

  1. Colour might evoke a mood or suggest a physical sensation.

Saturation, Vibrance … “Milky” vs Dynamic contrast

  1. Colour grade may draw attention to a particular area of the frame. Masks/vignettes

IN PREMIERE

Go to EFFECTS > VIDEO EFFECTS > COLOR CORRECTION > LUMETRI COLOR and drag this effect onto the clip (or onto an adjustment layer).

You make adjustments in Effect Controls window of your software (top left).

I generally adjust the curves to adjust exposure. Then three way colour wheels to make creative changes or to make colour consistent.

You can work on the whole frame, or specify an area with a shape matte.

Consider a subtle vignette (using vignette, or a shape matte) to draw our attention to an area.

1. Clean up the interview / dialogue / narration. Mute everything else.

Adjust volumes where necessary. VOX should be -12db to -6db.

“Patch” any “holes” where room tone audibly cuts out; use long fades to disguise room tone entering and leaving.

2. Don’t apply noise removal too heavily! ….IF AT ALL!

Noise removal filters are only really effective on consistent sounds on one frequency ( quiet air con, device buzz or hum) NOT on complex sounds (echo, exterior atmos, busy environments or poorly recorded audio).

3. Be tactical. Stagger the introduction of your aural elements. Give us three seconds (minimum) or a whole bar (music) to appreciate each texture before adding another!

4. Music has its greatest impact when it enters and leaves. Never put wall to wall music under your work!

REMEMBER : THE VOX ARE NEW TO YOUR LISTENER’S EARS. (Lower other elements if unsure)

Watch for out for RED appearing in the sound levels bar. Avoid distorted audio.
