Once more Jesus calls Himself the “light of the world.” Generally speaking, what possible things happen to those who were in darkness (as John said we all start) that are then exposed to the light?

It is true that the entailments of the Fall include suffering. But that general statement does not tightly connect to an individual’s suffering in every instance. Although some individual suffering is the result of that individual’s sin, not all is.
Pagans generally thought that saliva had magical healing powers, and it was often used in “miraculous healings.” Jewish rabbis taught that the firstbon son of the father (but not the mother) had saliva with healing properties, but because of its association with paganism, the rabbis generally rejected its use.
Scholars have put forward a number of reasons Jesus used a mudpack and saliva. Some see a symbolic connection with Genesis 2:7, wherein God makes man from the dust of the earth. Some, including John Calvin, thought that the use of spit and mud was meant to double the blindness in order to amplify the cure (like Elijah pouring water on his altar at Mount Carmel). More recently, some see it as a subtle attack on the social order of the day. Some taboos associated with human excreta were reversed; blood could cleanse and spit could cure. But the reversal could only happen by one with the right amount of authority.
