Learn: We are learning to use the distributive property for division.

Distributive property means breaking large numbers into small chunks to make it easier to solve.

Ruwani knows she can work out the answer to 72 ÷ 4 by breaking 72 into two parts that can be easily divided by 4.

72 ÷ 4 = 40 ÷ 4 + 32 ÷ 4

= 10 + 8

= 18

Follow up - this is already in your maths folder.

Learn: We are learning to divide by rounding to a tidy number and then compensating.

Jenna is putting tulip bulbs into bags for sale at the market. She has to put three bulbs into each bag. She has 84 bulbs and wants to know how many bags she will need.

Jenna knows that if she had 90 bulbs she would need 30 bags since 90 ÷ 3 = 30.

What does she need to do next?

Work out these together:

  • 343 ÷ 7
  • 224 ÷ 8
  • 597 ÷ 3
  • 392 ÷ 4
  • 1764 ÷ 18
